Short Story Analysis: The Preparation for Mabel s Transfiguration In the short story The Horse Dealer s Daughter by D. H. Lawrence, Mabel Person feels as though she lives in two opposite worlds. The fantasies and thoughts of her long time dead mother seem to her more real than her home life and brothers.

Before Mabel fell in love with Jack Fergusson, she believed that taking her life would be more beneficial than continuing to live her routine life. To die, she was convinced, would reunite her with her dear mother, the only person Mabel ever truly loved. This paradox inspired Mabel to try taking her own life. As defined in some poetry books, a paradox is an apparent contradiction that, upon deeper analysis, contains a degree of truth. (Stott et al. 1236). In the short story The Horse Dealer s Daughter, Mabel was convinced that she would rather die than live unhappily in a world which seemed unreal and dismal to her.

This is a contradiction due to the fact that if Mabel took her life, one cannot conceive or believe the idea that she would enter a world more real than her current life on earth. However, there is a slight amount of truth in Mabel s belief; for the only time she is ever truly satisfied and content is when she is at her mother s grave where she feels closest to her mother. Mabel s life at home is emotionless and routine. She simply goes through her every day activities as though she were a machine, showing no expression or empathy. The only place that Mabel is ever content and full of life is at the graveyard, surrounded by death. Because of this, she believes that if she dies, she will be encompassed by death all the time, therefore, she is convinced that she would be contented in this other world all the time as well.

Mabel is motivated to commit suicide by her understanding that her death would unite her with a world that is fulfilling and true. Still in mourning thirteen years after her mother s death, the only time Mabel ever felt satisfied was when she was near her mother s grave. This is because she felt in immediate contact with the world of her mother. (Lawrence in Cassill 535). Mabel suddenly came alive in her fantasy world with her mother.

However, in her life away from the graveyard she seemed almost dead, heartless. Utterly fulfilled cleaning and tidying the grave and it s surroundings, Mable went through the park in a state bordering on pure happiness, as if in performing the task she came into a subtle, intimate connection with her mother. For the life she followed here in the world was far less real than the world of death she inherited from her mother. (535). Mabel needed to feel loved and needed. Near her mother s grave is the only place she could experience a sense of these things.

At home, Mabel went through her daily activities of cooking, cleaning and other such household duties for her brothers routinely. Like a servant, she showed them no signs of love. In fact, she did not love them. She lived in memory of her mother, who had died when she was fourteen, and whom she had loved. (534).

As her father s house was sold, it came closer to the time that the siblings would be off on their own. Mabel, who had no other place to go, looked forward to her death with eager anticipation. Mindless and persistent, she seemed in a sort of ecstasy to be coming nearer to her fulfillment, her own glorification, approaching her dead mother, who was glorified. (535). The reason why Mabel was so eager to die seems simple. Her mother, the sole person Mabel ever honestly loved had died. Following the death of her mother, there was nobody left on earth that Mabel loved or was loved by.

Nobody else saw who Mabel was inside, behind her blank face and forced dull comments. She was viewed as ugly, hence her nicknamed bulldog for her rude facial expression. Mabel s mother had entered an unknown world, and out of love, Mabel wanted to follow her thinking that it would be better than earth. Mabel could not live without love in her life any longer.

When Mabel and Jack Fergusson spontaneously fall in love, she can finally stop mourning for her mother. The love and passion she now feels for Jack, and his love for her in return, create a fulfilling and meaningful life for Mabel on earth. She no longer feels the need to follow her mother in search of love and fulfillment. Suddenly what earlier in the day was glorified and needed, becomes dreaded. Now At last, she lets go and starts her life over.

No longer does she live surrounded by death and in memory of her dead loved mother. She transforms. Now, Mabel can live in the present. She is satisfied with her world, which has also been transformed in her eyes, because she is now loved. Mabel becomes reassured that Jack s feelings are true when he strives to prove himself. Jack makes sure that Mabel knows he went completely under the dirty pond water for her.

She takes this triumphantly as an act of love. With her new found emotions, Mabel is able to let go of the past and her fantasy of death and look forward to her future, without yearning to be in another world. In conclusion, the absence of love in Mabel s life causes her to strive for a better and more real world, which is virtually impossible for her. Unfortunately, the world that satisfies and fulfills Mabel is one filled with death, a graveyard. This area in which she spends her most valuable time is the only place she can feel a connection between her and her lost mother. This paradox developed in Lawrence s story The Horse Dealer s Daughter influences Mabel to the extent that she possesses a strong desire to drown herself to death.

Fortunately, she is saved by Jack Fergusson and the love they find guides Mabel into a whole new way of thinking. Soon her whole outlook on life changes drastically.
