Officials banned books, magazines, and newspapers that promoted ideas they disliked, along with their approval. In response thousands of artists, scientists, writers, musicians, and professors, both Jewish and non -Jewish, fled from the country. Many however, got arrested or killed. Even worse violence followed. Nazi officials had long planned a massive program, a group or mob attack, against Jews and their property. The Nazi found an excuse to launch this program when in October 1938; a teenager named Herschel Grynszpan shot a Nazi official in Paris.
