Michelangelo s Young Slave Michelangelo s Young Slave is a sculpture depicting slavery. The Young Slave is based on The Dying Slave. The medium Michelangelo used is marble, and is currently located in The Florence Academy of Art. This work was done for the tomb of Pope Julius II of 1516. The Young Slave is one of four slaves completed for Pope Julius II. The slaves appear to be trapped in the blocks of marble, in which they emerge.
This expresses perfectly their desire to escape from this imprisonment. In this piece Michelangelo expresses matter and spirit, death and life, and slavery and freedom. The slaves that were made for Pope Julius II were never finished. I really enjoyed this piece, even though it wasn t completely finished. I chose this piece because I had never heard of it before, and I was eager to learn something new about this great work. If I had the money to throw around on fancy art I would buy this piece, but I m pretty sure it s not for sale.
Seeing how it was made for the tomb of Pope Julius II I m sure it would cost at least a couple million dollars. This piece was hard to find information about. I looked in all of the books in the library on Michelangelo, and I only came up with two sources, which had very limited amounts of information.
