This story begins by the Salinas River during the Great Depression, near Soledad, California, where two migrant workers by the names of George Small and Lennie Milton are on their way to a nearby ranch. They have just escaped another ranch because of lennie, he is mentally ill and is always getting both of them into trouble or fired from their jobs. Lennie was being accused of rape for feeling the softness of a young lady's dress. George is like lennie's big brother always scolding him for the trouble he causes! George scold s lennie for playing with a dead mouse on their way to the ranch and tells him not to talk when they arrive there. Lennie thens complains about not having ketchup for the only they have to eat...

But then he begins talking about him and lennie have: owning a patch of land and tending all their animals especially the rabbits, lennie's favorite. Lennie knows if he gets into any trouble again he will lose that privellage, so then George tells Lennie if he does get in trouble to hide in the brush they are nearby. When George an Lennie reach the bunkhouse they meet an old man, Candy is his name.
They soon meets their boss, but he finds them suspicious because george is always speaking for lennie, but he gives them work. When the boss leaves his son, Curly enters the bunkhouse and despises lennie the minute he sees him, Curly is insecure of himself because of his height (he is very short). Soon they meet Curly's wife, whom flirts with all the men there. Later curly returns looking for his wife and confronts George in an attempt to start a fight. After a days work a friend by the name of Slim tells the guys his dog just had a item of puppies and with lennie's infatuation with softness he asks for one. Later that night george tells candy about their dream and Candy tells him he knows of a house if three men put their money together.
Curly once again searches for his wife and ends up fighting lennie when he suspects lennie laughs at him, lennie does not fight back until he got permission from george. Lennie then grips onto Curly's hand and crushes it. This is not to be spoken about to anyone. One night while the other men are at the whorehouse, Lennie goes to visit Crooks the black stable buck. He is very rude towards Lennie. He makes lennie feel insecure about his and georges friendship and sites lennie off.
The next morning while lennie plays with his puppy he accidently pets it to hard and kills the pup. Curly's wife enters the barn and find lennie with the dead puppy and when she allows him to feel how soft her hair is, he presses to hard on her head and she began screaming, lennie doesn'y want to get in trouble so he covers her mouth and as she tries to struggle free from his grasp he snaps her neck. Lennie realize he has done wrong so he runs as fast as he can to the brush george had told him about. Candy and george soon find the body and immediately realize lennie killed her. Candy alerts the men and Curly intends to murder lennie. Meanwhile george has stolen a gun from Carlson making the men believe lennie had stole it.
George who points Curley and the other men in the wring direction, finds lennie in the brush. George begins to talk to lennie, he knows for himself he has lost the possibility of tending the rabbit, george begins to tell lennie about their plans for a house and the rabbit hutch when he shoots lennie in the back of the head with Carlson's gun. Upon hearing this, the other men find George and Lennie. George tells them that Lennie had stolen the gun and he shot Lennie when he got the back from him. George then travels on his own, missing Lennie But relieved from constant trouble. Bibliography:
