This book was about a group of friends that play golf and gamble all day at the worst golf course in America (they call it Ponky). One day one of them proposes a bet to see who could be the first one to play in the Mayflower, the golf course next door. This wasnt easy because the Mayflower is one of the best courses in America. So Two Down, Dannie and Raymond each put in $ 1, 000 to see who could play the course first. What everybody doesnt know is that Raymond's father belongs to the club. But Raymond hasnt spoken with him for years after he tortured his other son, who eventually committed suicide.
Raymond wasnt going to call his father until it became absolutely necessary. All three had many good ideas, but they all failed. Finally, all three of them landed tee times on the final day of the bet, but not before they raised the stakes another $ 1, 000 each. Raymond was forced to call and play with his father, but he did win the bet.
Things werent the same between the friends after the bet and Raymond didnt like it either. Then Two Down got into some gambling trouble. Two Down made a crazy bet with a man who he was down to, to play 18 holes, nine at the Mayflower and nine at Ponky. Both men had one partner, Two Down chose Ray and the man he was down to (Concorde) chose Rays father. Two Down had to give up his house if he lost and Ray would bet his Jack Nicklaus driver that Jack himself used to defeat Arnold Palmer at the 1962 US Open, which had a face value of about $ 35, 000. I enjoyed this book very much.
This is the best book that I have read in a long time. I think that one of the reasons I liked it was because it was so funny. The first thing I found funny was the terminology they used while they played at Ponky. For example, when someone had a bad round they referred to it as putting up a radio station, to emphasize the high score. Another thing that was funny is that on a normal day, all they did was gamble, play golf, gamble, drink and gamble some more. I also liked that the people in the book were fearless.
They were not afraid to use a fake name or sneak into the club and play around at night. The most fearless thing that was in the book was when Dannie waited for a member to die and then go into the club and pretend that she did not know about his death. She proceeded to tell the club official that the recently deceased member was supposed to make a tee time for her to play that morning. The club official then told Dannie because this was such terrible news and she was so depressed that she and the rest of her group should go ahead and play a free round. Although the idea ended up not working, it was an idea that took a lot of balls to attempt to pull off. Another thing I liked about the book was the cleverness of the author.
When the three were trying to win the bet they all came up with some pretty clever ideas, all of which could of easily worked. And when they were playing the nine holes at each course, the author came up with some pretty smart and funny ideas for things that happened. Another thing I really liked about this book was the fact that it wasnt like most books. When I say this I mean that because if this was any other regular old book, the first bet would have lasted the whole book and it wouldnt have been as interesting. when the bet got started, the first ideas that they came up with, even though they were clever, we all new they would not wok because then there would be nothing to write about for the rest of the story. But instead of being like other books, it surprised me by ending the story much earlier and continuing with a whole new saga that I did not expect to happen.
I also enjoyed the fact that one character came up with a clever idea he was soon to be matched by another character Even though I did like this book very much, there were a few parts that could have been better in my opinion. For starters, I didnt like the way the author jumped around from chapter to chapter. At the end of a chapter he could be talking about something to do with golf and at the beginning of the next chapter it was like the book had nothing to do with golf and all it talked about was his brother or father. He kind of left you hanging in some parts by not continuing with the same thought into the next chapter. At least he could of ended the golf thought or story, start the next chapter and then talk about his family problems.
I didnt like the way that he left the story hanging and started a completely new thought. I also think that in the first part of the book he didnt take enough time to explain each character. I seemed to get confused with all those people who hung around Ponky and who they were and what they were doing. I liked all the characters, but I did get confused to who was doing what sometimes. Raymond Lee Hart is an immoral person because he fails to display the virtues of honesty, wise judgment, and respect for creation.
All throughout the book, Ray chooses to do the wrong thing. It didnt matter if he were lying, cheating or making and ass out of another person, he chose wrong and he failed miserably to display these First, Raymond fails to display the virtue of honesty. There are a few times in the novel where Ray is not honest. At other times in the book he doesnt lie, but is not completely honest either.
