Louis XIV was the king of France from 1643 - 1715 in this reign he made some great statements about religion. From the Edict of Nates to rejecting Colbert ideas. Before Louis was king a man named Henry IV he declared that the Huguenots could worship in peace. Huguenots could set up at least one house to worship at. This declaration was known as the Edict of Nates. Many of Frances skilled workers and business leaders were Huguenots (French protestants).
They took a leading role in commerce, banking, and industry- the economic activities that Colbert had encouraged. Both France and the Huguenots prospered from Colbert s ideas. Louis undid much of Colbert s work soon after he died in 1683. Louis was a devoted catholic. He revoked the Edict of Nates no longer could the Huguenots attend their own churches or schools. If they did not agree with this law then they could be imprisoned.
Louis lost many of his middle class cause his middle class was made up of Huguenots. Louis paid a high price for his religious intolerance. Louis XIV was before enlightenment really started. It didn t start in till Louis XV.

One of the better things of Louis was that he appreciated the arts. He had the Mona Lisa in his bedroom. He also loved plays and musicals. In all Louis had his ups and downs when he ruled.
