Evil within Lord of the Flies Essay Within every soul s lining lies the capacity for evil. This evil lurks about and is hidden deep inside almost every character in the novel, Lord of the Flies. It was most compellingly represented through the eerie beast, the constant search to kill pigs, and the endless pestering and mockery directed towards Piggy. The beast manifested much evil that was vividly present throughout the story.

From the little uns, to the boys who portrayed themselves as strong and bold characters, they all feared the daunting creature. In attempt to persuade the beast from killing them, a group of hunters put a pig s head on a stick and left it for the beast to savor. Simon wandered by the pig s head and through his mind s eye, it began to taunt and tease him. It told him, Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill didnt you? Im part of you? Im the reason why it s no go.

Simon became conscious that the beast was just a concoction of their imaginations. He stumbled out of the forest, weak and frail, to tell the others that the beast was simply a horrible creature they had created themselves. At first sight of Simon, they stabbed him to death. Their minds were so fixed on this fictional beast and killing it, that they attacked at first sight of any living thing in movement. Bollocks to the rules; were strong we hunt! If theres a beast, well hit it down!

The boys had produced for themselves a beast that did not truly exist in reality, which led to the formation of evil within them. The beast was clearly a link to evil in the heads of the boys and on the island. The fascination of hunting and killing the pigs that inhabited the island, was another indication of the evil within the boys. Primarily, Jack the chief hunter, felt remorse and gave up the opportunity to kill a pig. They closed in on the struggling pig, they had outwitted a living thing, imposed their will upon it, taken away its life like a long satisfying drink. As the story progressed hunting became easier for the boys, the evil that dweller inside each of them developed and became more evident.

Another specimen that suggested that evil had conquered the thoughts of the boys was their hunting chant. Kill the pig. Cut her throat. Bash her in.

No innocent, harmless child would have the desire to say such words. In the beginning of the story the idea of killing pigs was for simply for survival. But, as the boys became accustomed to the island, killing pigs became an obsession amongst the boys. The evil in the minds of the boys was tightly related to the rummage for pigs. The fact that Piggy was made fun of throughout the novel, also suggested that evil prowled amongst the boys. Principally, Piggy begged not to be called a name that would bond him to his chubby appearance.

The other boys immediately rejected his request, and referred to him as Piggy. They ridiculed him because he was unique from the others, he wore glasses, had asthma and consisted of a plump frame. There had grown up tacitly among the biguns the opinion that Piggy was an outsider, not only by accent, which did not matter, but by fat, and ass-mar, and specs, and a certain distinction for manual labor. Being named after a pig, stirred problems, for the boys were very keen on hunting down pigs. To jeer at one the way the boys did, shows that one has traces of evil in their thoughts.

The hostility shown towards Piggy was another sense of the evil within the novel. Throughout the novel, evil could be detected from most characters as they determined how to survive on the stranded island. We witnessed the evil come alive through the beast, the hunting of pigs, and by the insolent manner in which Piggy was treated. Evil is unarguably the ultimate force behind negativity and everything wrong with society.
