The problems in today's society with the education system are endless. So many students are deprived of the quality of the education they deserve today. Many elementary and high schools are improving but deserve more attention with school supplies, smaller classrooms, and need more highly qualified teachers. Schools today are in a bad need of change.
Students deserve to have the education they need to prepare them for the future because they are the future of America one day. Schools should help prepare students to succeed by providing text books and supplies that are updated. "I pulled my 12 -year-old psychology book out of my backpack. " (Galyan 2). Gear Gayland, 17, a student at Marshal High School in LA District reports she had to use a used 1986 psychology book and had to wait for a calculus book for two months. Textbooks should be updated every five years so that the new information will not be left out for the student. It is important that we update any new information in textbooks so that we can keep up with the current subjects. The more updated our books our, the more knowledge we gain.
Also, the supplies needed should be obtained earlier so that assignments can be assigned in the textbooks rather than having handouts of massive papers (4). We need to find a way to raise more money so that we can have materials ready for students. Crowded classrooms are becoming more and more of a problem as the student population continues to grow. Classrooms are packed each day as students sit on the floor or stand up during a full class period.
It is very important to have a classroom that is comfortable and spacious. The student ratio should decrease so student get more attention from teachers. The comfort of being in a classroom will help students concentrate more in school because they have a place to sit on a desk and write instead of having to worry about finding a place to sit. Building portable classrooms will help resolve the crowded suffocating classrooms.
California alone spent more than $ 1 billion a year to reduce the classes in the early primary grades (Ross 7). With updated materials and improvement in classrooms, qualified teachers are in badly needed also. The problems with teachers nowadays are that they are not qualified to teach. We need more teachers who care and direct students in the right direction instead of having a teacher that lectures and goes home after the bell rings. Students need mentors to point them in the right direction of their future. Applicants today only need a bachelor's degree in any subject to teach.
They are trained while they work on emergency credentials (Gayland 6). Basically, teachers are not qualified to teach but rather have been hired because there is a great need to fill the position. They lack the knowledge of the subject that they are teaching to the students. This means that they don't need a Math degree to teach math.
The lack of knowledge a teacher has will reflect the performance of the students has on a test if the teacher is not an expert in a subject. It is important for a teacher to be an expert in a subject so that more information will be taught to the students. This will improve the performance of the student in test especially on College Entry Exams. When teachers don't have the knowledge, results become noticeable.
Standards in education have decreased due to the lack of qualified teachers. Lower test scores have affected the results but there are a few good teachers out there (Ross 9). School Administrators should be stricter in the hiring process and should look for qualified experienced teachers who had the proper training to teach. The school district's hiring process should not be lenient in hiring teachers just because they are in desperate need of teachers.
Improvements in education will never end. I'm sure there will always be issues to deal with but for now the changes should be taken care of especially with hiring qualified teachers and improvements in books and classrooms are very important. The government should invest in today's young generation because they will be the future Americans in control of the country one day and they should have the education to help prepare them for it. They should start by funding more money to school budgets to hire more qualified teachers and build classrooms rather than spend more money in improving administration.
The more money a school has, the more programs it will develop to satisfy students' needs especially with after school programs such as tutoring. Bibliography:
