Lord of the Flies by William Golding William Golding: was born in the beginning of the 20 th century and grew up in the years before World War II. That war changed thinking about man s essential nature. You can see the influence of this shift in thinking in Golding s works. Golding yearned to be like the characters in the fables and stories he read. The island setting for Lord of the Flies and the names of the persons were taken from Coral Island. At about the age of twelve he decided to be a writer so he studied literature in college.

After the second World War W. Golding came to believe that there was a very dark and evil side to man. The war he said was very unlike. It taught us not fighting but about the given nature of man.

His first three novels were very much like novels he had read, and he had called them the rubbish of imitation. His forth novel was Lord of the Flies 1983 he earned the Nobel price for literature and died 10 years later in 1993. Plot: The action takes place on the mountain, where Ralph assembles the boys by blowing the conch. Ralph the is elected as leader. They realise that they re on an island.

Then they decide to light a fire on the mountain as a signal and for protection. The fir burns out of control and kills a little one (the first victim of the fire). In the third chapter the action takes partly place on the beach and in the jungle. Ralph and Simon built shelters on the beach, jack went to hunt in the jungle (maybe the first splitting of the group and first conflict). A ship passed the island but the signal fire isn t burning anymore because the responsible boys went hunting. In the whole excitement one lens of Piggy s glasses gets broken.

Ralph calls an assembly and tells the boys that the have to follow the rules. He tells them that the have to work together. The meeting has a sudden ending because Jack breaks it up by leaving the platform with his boys (first splitting into two groups). A dead airman is parachuted down on the island. As it s dark, Samneric thinks that it must be a monster.

Ralph takes a search party to the castle rock looking for the beast. Jack finally splits with Ralph, taking his hunters with him. Jack and his hunters started to live like the savages. Ralph who still wants to be rescued lights a new fire on the beach.

Simon hides in the jungle and talks to the lord the flies. Simon solves the secret of the beast but gets accidentally killed when he tries to tell it to the others. It was dark and the boys thought the he is the monster and killed him with their spears. One night the hunters raid the shelters and steal Piggy s glasses. As they try to get Piggy s glasses back, Piggy gets killed, Samneric gets captured and Ralph is driven away. Jack s savage hunters set nearly the whole island on fire and try to hunt Ralph down.

A ship sees the smoke and rescues the boys. Characters / interpretation of the child psychology: Ralph comes from a good English family, and is representative of the genteel, British middle class. He is a likeable boy but not a very good thinker. He seldom sees the meaning of things until someone points it out to him. At the end of the story he has learnt a bitter lesson: his dream world and his idealism have been crushed. He is a disillusioned realist who never sees the world for what they are.

Jack is tall and thin, red-haired and ugly. The reader knows nothing about his past. At the beginning he s co-operative and positive in his behaviour. But then he turns into a spontaneous, unthinking person, and represents the evil part of mind, as insinuated by the madness in his eyes and his bloodlust. He lives every day as if it was his last.

Piggy comes from the working class. He is fat and bald-looking. He plays the adult role in the novel and is a clear thinker. Piggy always makes sense and is never impulsive. Simon is a small, thin boy with a pointed chin and very bright eyes.

Simon is very co-operative. He is the only one who helps Ralph building the Shelters. He has intuitive wisdom the others think he s crazy. His words of wisdom are not heard (he is the intended Christ figure). Simon represents that part of man which is sensitive to beauty and truth. The lord of the flies is the head of a pig which they stuck on a spear.

It is a metaphor for all evil and bad acting of the boys. The Lord of the flies is like a good / devil for them. They fear him and fear let make them crazy things which they never thought they would be able to do. Background William Golding presented numerous themes and basic ideas that give the reader something to think about.

One of the most basic and obvious themes is that society holds everyone together, and without these conditions, our ideals, values, and the basics of right and wrong are lost. Without society's rigid rules, anarchy and savagery can come to light. Golding is also showing that morals come directly from our surroundings, and if there is no civilization around us, we will lose these values.
