In the book Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, there is a lot of cruelty and unfairness to other characters. Well one in particular would be Piggy. Golding gives piggy certain traits that make him a good target for abuse. These traits can be found in people today that have the same problems. The main irony in this is that Piggy has all the useful ideas but because of his physical and mental abnormalities cause him to be abused.

The main question, which we will be discussing, is why people are treated this way and how this issue is present in todays society. Piggy was a short fat kid who is continually being teased. It started off right in the beginning. At first Ralph didnt even want to know his name, and then he heard that the kids at his school used to call him piggy and Ralph burst into laughter.

Even when Ralph promised not to tell the others about his name, he went ahead and told them anyway. They all thought that it was funny that a kid was called piggy. They made fun of him just because he tried to be friendly and he didnt look like the others. For example when Ralph and Piggy realize that they are on an island alone with no adults Piggy says, I expect well want to know all there names, and make a list. We ought to have a meeting. (Pg. 11) But Ralph just ignored him and didnt care what he had to say. Piggy tried to give some thoughtful input to help them organize the situation but Ralph didn t care.

This happens throughout the novel and makes Piggy feel really bad. Again when piggy wanted to go up the mountain, Ralph told him that he wasnt in shape and that he couldnt make it so he just staid with all the other boys. Golding is trying to show how people don t care about others feelings and how they just walk all over others. It happens in the book to Piggy who is a fat kid who wears glasses and tries to be nice to the others. In the book Jack the head of the hunters, and all the other hunter boys represent the community in our lives and piggy represents the small fat nerdy kids.

They all gang up on the loner and pick on him continually. They do it as if they get enjoyment out of it, while it completely ruins the kids life. This novel even took it as far as to actually kill Piggy. This book is a kind of over dramatic story of what happens in our communities. At every school and in every grade there is a certain type of kid that gets picked on by all the others. It isnt a one-time thing either.

It starts off small like with a nickname and then progresses until it is tormenting and taunting. It ruins the kids life and makes him feel bad about himself. Golding in a way is trying to show that once you do it, it progresses into worse things and moves from person to person and by then you are nothing but a bunch of bullies which no one likes. The symbolic meanings are to show that sometimes you just need to listen to the kids that you pick on and maybe you will get some good ideas from them. So don t just harass them and if you try to be their friend you can benefit from them. It is easier to see that the kids most likely to be picked on are the smart non-athletic kids that don t have a life and tend to stay at home reading or are on the computer.

And that those kids probably know a lot more about things than you know and it would do you good to listen to them once in a while. If you get anything out of this book at all try to look past the island and survival, and look how society interacts with each other. Try not to be discriminate on looks or physical stature and look to see the intellectual portion. You dont need to be friends with the nerds but just dont be mean to them. They have just as much of a life as you do. It isnt worth more or less than yours, but they are equal.

Next time you see a kid being picked on by a big dumb bully stand up for them because often they cant do it for themselves, especially when the are outnumbered.
