The story starts out in England where a nuclear war starts. Because of the war, they tried to evacuate as many boys as possible, and as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, as the children were in the plane flying away from England to a safe place, the plane crashed and none of the adults on the plane survived. But fortunately, there was an island that saved their lives. The kids felt it was a great opportunity to experience the freedom and safety from the outside world. This island seemed to be very peaceful, and a very nice place to live in.

You could call this island the replica of Garden of Eden to them. The main characters start out with Ralph and Piggy. At first, Ralph really doesnt favor Piggy much but as time passed, Ralph adapted to living with Piggy. There was also Jack and his choirboys. Another character that I disliked very much was Roger. Later on in the book, Roger ends up killing Piggy because of certain conflicts.

A character I can relate to is Ralph. One flaw I think was in Ralph was the fact that although he listened to his people and tried very hard to keep them safe, he wasnt very effective in what he was doing as a leader. He wasnt very effective because he was afraid to make wrong decisions. Ralph was also a child that couldnt keep a secret nor say a lie. For example, when Piggy was talking with Ralph about what Piggy's schoolmates called him, Ralph went around talking about it. Although Im not the kind of person that would do that, there are other characteristics about Ralph that I would agree on having the same characteristics.

Ralph was the leader of the group on the island. Being a leader, he could choose the type of government: Democracy, or Communism. Ralph was more of a democrat. He always listened to what the people had to say. Another thing Ralph also represented law, order, and organization in the way he ran his government. A character I didnt favor was Jack.

John could be considered a totalitarian because he really didnt care what the other people were saying. Id probably call him a communist instead. In the introduction of Jack in the story, he was very polite, civilized and the kind of person you would see with a perfect etiquette along with his meticulous mannerisms. For example, when he was chosen to kill the pig for food, Jack couldnt do it because he felt sorry for the pig.

But later on in the book, things change. Some things that changed were: Ralph was replaced by Jack as the leader, Jack learned to kill the pig for food, Jack actually was killing the pigs for fun instead of a necessity. Further on in the book, you learn that Jack wasnt the Jack you thought he would be; Jack didnt wear any clothes-instead he painted himself as a devil being covered in blood. He felt that he could overcome his fear of death by killing other things. Another character I would respect is Piggy. I did feel sorry for Piggy because of many things.

The most obvious was probably was his weight, his glasses, and his asthma problem. I also felt down when I found out he died. He was very smart and he tried his best to prove every informational fact with science and logic. He was dislike by all of the other boys. Piggy represented the knowledge, reason, and morality in the group of kids in the island.

He was also very the kind of person who would only see the good side of people and not the evil side. Like Ralph, Piggy could see from right and wrong in what the kids did As I was reading this book, I noticed how true this story can actually be. As I was talking to my brother about this story, he told me much about the fact that all this is true. The fact that he is majoring in Psychology led me to believe him. Some things my brother pointed out was the fact that Jack changed his whole personality by forgetting about the past and looking forward to the future. He showed me how positive Jacks mind was in the thinking process in the past, but as time passed along towards the future, his mind converted into a negative perspective.

He also showed me Ralph's perspective. He made me notice how the changes in Ralph's behavior wasnt a great amount. Personally, I think that the reason Jacks mind went from positive to negative was the environment in which he was living. Therefore, Jack was too weak to realize how much hed changed. I also think the reason Ralph's mind was in the same state was the fact that he was emotionally stronger than Jack.

I enjoy reading William Golding's, the author of Lord of the Flies, descriptions about the main characters in the story. A few examples were the descriptions of Ralph, Jack, and Roger. He was thin and bond; and his hair was red beneath the black cap. His face was crumpled and freckled, and ugly without silliness. Out of this face stared two light eyes, frustrated now, and turning, or ready to turn, to anger, the previous citing was a description of Jack. This citing being about Ralph: You could see now that he might make a boxer, as far as width and heaviness of shoulders went, but there was a mildness about his mouth and eyes that proclaimed no devil.

Roger was the one who Piggy at the end of the book. A slight, furtive boy whom no one knew, who kept to himself with an inner intensity of avoidance and secrecy the shock of black hair, down his nape and low on his forehead, seemed to suit his gloomy face and made what had seemed at first an unsociable remoteness into something forbidding. The symbolism in this book was something that I noticed (for once in my life)! The island could have been just simply an earth. Because the island was populated by a certain number of people just like the earth you could consider the island Earth. Another way you can see this island as Earth is by seeing how Earth is an island as well.

Earth is part of a solar system just like how an country such as Japan is made up of islands. So if you can substitute the earth as the universe, and you can substitute Japan as Earth you will understand a little bit of the symbolism here. Another example of symbolism is: the two different types of political groups on Earth and in the island. In the island, there is capitalism and democracy like Ralph's group. There is also totalitarianism and communism like Jack and his choirboys. On earth, it is very similar to each other.
