In William Golding s novel, Lord of the Flies, these techniques are evident and well constructed. Demonstrated by his effective use of literary elements and figurative language, Golding s depiction of a group of boys stranded on an island is a superb example for literary analysis. In Lord of the Flies, one of the effective literary elements is Golding section, or word choice. For example, this passage, His ordinary voice sounded like a whisper after the harsh note of the conch... The note boomed again: and then at his firmer pressure, the note, fucking up an octave, became a strident blare more penetrating than before, his diction allows the reader to further hear the sounds created by the words.
The word harsh is strong to the ear, making the reader cringe in mock reaction. Boomed, is another good example, as it seems to give the note authority and power. Another example: ... Up there, for once, were clouds, great bulging towers that sprouted away over the island, gray and cream and copper colored.
Once again, Golding s use of diction effectively gives the clouds a sense of character and being, and allows the reader to see a sky full of vibrant colors. This use of diction also sets a themed throughout the novel. The creating of the mood in Lord of the Flies also is an effective literary element, resting heavily on Golding s diction. The mood changes with the different situations the characters encounter. For example, here is an excerpt from when Ralph, Roger, and Jackare investigating the the beast up on the hilltop: ... Ralph could hear a tiny chattering noise coming from somewhere perhaps from his own mouth.
He bound himself together with his will, fused his fear and loathing into a hatred, and stood up. He took two leaden steps forward. Behind them the silver moon had drawn clear of the horizon. Before them, something like a great ape was sitting asleep with its head between its knees. Then the wind roared in the forest, there was confusion in the darkness and the creature lifted its head, holding them the ruin of a face. This passage creates a dark and mysterious mood, and this feeling is conveyed to the reader, giving it a deeper attitude.
Another good example is at the end of the novel, when Ralph is being pursued by the rest of the pack to kill him; And there again, shrill and inevitable, waste ululation sweeping across the island. At that sound he shied like a horse among the creepers and ran once more till he was panting. He flung himself down by some ferns. The tree, or the charge? He mastered his breathing for a moment, wiped his mouth, anatole himself to be calm. Samneric were somewhere in that line, and hating it.
Or were they? And supposing, instead of them, he met the chief, or Roger who carried death india hands? This passage clearly sets the mood of fear and panic, and effectively transports this feeling to the reader, who in turn feels the raw emotion of this event. When his glasses are broken in the novel, it marks the progressive decay of rational influence. And Jack easily can be likened to the symbol ofthe more primordial influence, the leader of the forces of anarchy on the island, which injury can be compared to the same type of influence on the modern world. Golding uses these types of symbolism throughout the novel, and even the name of the novel, Lord ofthe Flies, is a translation of the Hebrew word Ba alzevuv, Beelzebub in Greek. This injury signifies the devil himself, his death, destruction, and decay, which may be an effective representation of the theme of Golding s novel.
