Intro: Loneliness is a disease. It eats away at people slowly, gradually tearing them limb from limb. It is a virus that send some people insane, some turn senile, it sorts the strong characters from the weak and it can devastate lives. In the book &incl; § of Mice and Men&incl; ¨ I am going to look at 3 different characters and compare them and how they cope with this disease.
Not only this but how this affects them, their hopes and their dreams. Curley&incl; &briar; s Wife You never learn the name of Curley&incl; &briar; s wife, which shows how she is thought of in the farm. I think she is regarded as one of Curley&incl; &briar; s possessions. She is always heavily made up and sometimes dressed up. She mostly wears sexy clothes, which attracts the farm workers. &incl; ¥ She had full rouged lips and wide-spaced eyes, heavily made up. Her finger-nails were red.
Her hair hung in little rolled clusters, like sausages. &incl; &briar; I think that all of this shows that she spends a lot of time on her own and that she doesnt go out much. But when she does go out of the house to talk to ranch workers she tries to make an impression by using make-up etc. &incl; § She&incl; &briar; s party, &incl; ¨ said Lennie, &incl; § Yeah and she&incl; &briar; s sure hiding&incl; &briar; it. &incl; ¨ George says sarcastically. George means that Curley&incl; &briar; s wife wants the attention of everyone. She wants everyone to notice her and to fancy her. Curley&incl; &briar; s wife is seen by some as &incl; § jail-bait&incl; ¨ . This means she is very provocative, she dresses herself up to attract some ranch workers and then Curley would duff them up or get them canned.
This is not what necessarily happens but it is what all the workers believe what will happen is they do anything to her. This is why George warns Lennie away from Curley's wife. &incl; § Don&incl; &briar; t you even take a look at that bitch. I don&incl; &briar; t care what she says and what she does &incl; K I never seen a piece of jail-bait worse than her. You leave her be. &incl; ¨ George warns Lennie away just in case he gets to close to her and Curley gets annoyed and starts a fight with him. I think that she is very lonely. As she is the only woman on the ranch she has no one to talk or gossip to.
She tries to talk to some of the workers but they are scared of what Curley would do to them. This definitely adds to her loneliness. She always claims to be &incl; § looking for Curley&incl; ¨ , which I think, is an excuse to chat up the ranch workers. But definitely, the main reason she feels so unhappy and alone is because of her husband.
He forces his wife to feel alone because he forbids her out of the house and, I am pretty sure he beats her. Also, he visits brothels and this makes her feel inadequate. For Curley&incl; &briar; s wife Curley was second choice and he acts like it. She does have several dreams of a better life. When men promise her careers in acting and film she believes them but I think that they just wanted her to sleep with them. Because her dreams fail she marries Curley.
Now she is trapped on this ranch with no one to speak to apart from Curley &incl; V who is not much comfort although he does try with his &incl; § glove full of Vaseline&incl; ¨ . This makes her feel isolated. When she dies P 98. It shows her loneliness disappearing from her face.
When she is alive she is troubled and her face is always full of emotions but when she dies all that goes away from her. And she is left happy and trouble-free. Curley Curley is described as a small man. &incl; ¥ &incl; K his hands closed into fists &incl; K his glance was at once calculating and pugnacious &incl; K Curley lashed his body around &incl; K&incl; &briar; Curley is a born fighter &incl; V everything about him confirms that. He is like this because he feels inferior mainly because he is the boss&incl; &briar; s son and he needs to have a lot of power over the ranch workers. But Curley feels threatened by big workers like Lennie so he beats them up to keep his reputation and retain his power over the workers. He also feels ashamed of how unhappy his wife is.
He feels that this could spoil his prominence and respect that he has earned. This also amounts to his fight with Curley. I think that he is a perverted man because he takes pleasure and enjoys himself when he beats up others. This reassures him that he is the strongest hardest man on the ranch. Curley gets his violent attitude of life from his hay day when he was a boxer. He got into the final of the golden glove competition and he really enjoyed himself inflicting maximum amounts of pain on people.
He hangs onto this dream for as long as he can. I think that it is his way of dealing with the rejection from is wife. Curley cannot be friendly with any of the ranch workers because he is the bosses son and the boss is never friendly with his workers incase he has to sack them. This adds to Curley&incl; &briar; s collection of bad feelings about himself. Also, in order to have any kind of control over the workers he must not be friendly with them so he can keep his reputation and people can stay scared of him. He finds it increasingly difficult to see things from different perspectives.
This is his flaw in life. He cannot identify with how others see and feel things, this results in him being nasty to everyone including his wife. E. g. He goes to a brothel every month but when his wife even talk to another man he complains. Crooks The most lonely character in the whole book.
Where Curley&incl; &briar; s wife had Curley and Curley had his wife Crooks has no one. No one to speak to, no one to be with, no one to converse with and no one to keep him from going mad. He was completely alone. Because of this he didn&incl; &briar; t know what was right and what was wrong. He even tries to explain this himself. He can&incl; &briar; t tell if he&incl; &briar; s dreamed something or not and he doesn&incl; &briar; t know how to behave around other guys.
In chapter 4 Crooks gets the chance to be horrible to some one else. He turns on Lennie and starts to be really nasty to him suggesting George won&incl; &briar; t come back. I think all those years alone have made him feel that he is always picked on and now he has the chance to pick on someone else so he does. But he then backs down for fear of Lennie losing his rag. Crooks enjoys talking to Lennie because he knows that none of it will come out and he can tell Lennie anything he wants to. He confides in Lennie and begins to trust him with secrets he has never told anyone.
Crooks starts to describe his earliest memories and he begins to reflect on his own life. After picking on Lennie Crooks has a new found confidence that makes him feel almost equal to Lennie and Candy. As Lennie describes his &incl; ¥ dream farm&incl; &briar; Crooks is very cynical about it and he doesn&incl; &briar; t believe it will happen. But when Candy comes in and joins in the conversation Crooks realises how close they are top their dream. This inspires him and he wants to join in. Crooks is feeling good at this point and he feels self-assured that he can take on anything.
But then Curley&incl; &briar; s wife appears and starts to stir everything up. The atmosphere in the room becomes tense and nasty. Crooks starts to get annoyed because he was having a good conversation which he doesn&incl; &briar; t often get which made him feel very good about himself and Curley&incl; &briar; s wife has started to tear everything apart. He starts to get almost angry and stands up to her telling her she &incl; § got no rights messing around in here at all. Now you jus&incl; &briar; get out, an&incl; &briar; get out quick. &incl; ¨ But he forgets about his place in life and he is shown where he belongs by Curley&incl; &briar; s wife. She starts on him &incl; § You know what I could do if you open your trap? &incl; K Well, you keep you place, then, Nigger.
I could get you strung up on a tree so easy it ain&incl; &briar; t even funny. &incl; ¨ Crooks has no reply to this. Then the old insecure Crooks comes out. Crooks &incl; ¥ drew into himself&incl; &briar; and &incl; ¥ reduced himself to nothing&incl; &briar; . He then has &incl; ¥ no personality, no ego &incl; V nothing to arouse like or dislike. &incl; &briar; This is a sign of the loneliness Crooks has experienced in his life. He must have done it before in order to be so good at it. All the time he has spent by himself &incl; V he has convinced himself that he is worth nothing and nobody cares about him.
This is a form of torture for Crooks. Conclusion: Loneliness is a disease. George had Lennie to and Lennie had George to combat the terrible affects of it. But there were other who were not so lucky &incl; V Crooks was intensely unhappy, un confident and seriously mentally damaged from the lasting affects of loneliness. Curley&incl; &briar; s wife was killed essentially by loneliness &incl; V it was that that made her talk to the farm workers and Lennie this lead to her death. Loneliness is a part of human nature whether we like it not, as with everything, there are winners and there are losers.
