World War II was simply the bloodiest war the world has ever known, killing some 60 million men, women and children. The war transformed America into a superpower that would influence events around the world for 50 years. When World War II began in 1939, Germany was the aggressor, it was later joined in June 1940, by Italy, and Japan in December 1941. But on the morning of September 1 st 1939, the world was forever changed as Germany invaded Poland and executed its first Blitzkrieg or Lightning attack, quickly crushing Polish resistance.

In less than a month, Poland had been conquered. There followed an inactive period (dubbed the Phony War) that lasted until April 1940. From 1939 to 1945, Germany's military machine struck out and conquered most of Western Europe, however, the Allies gathered strength and eventually crushed the German Army and Axis powers with a display of brute force that has remained unmatched to this day. In 1938, the Munich Agreement is signed. In March of 1939, Hitler annexed Austria and later occupied the Sudetenland. At this time, the US did not offer protest but was trying to remain neutral.

On August 23, Hitler signed a non-aggression pact with Stalin in order to gain Russian help in the Polish invasion. On August 31, 1939, German SS men forced prisoners to stage a Polish attack on German soil. This was to make it right for Germany to invade Poland. After Germany invades Poland, Britain and France declare war (September 3).

However, neither country was truly committed to fighting a war and wanted to keep it from starting. Hitler was able to defeat and control Poland. It was only after Hitler invaded Poland that the US did anything. However, all that they did was to approve the sell of arms to France and Britain. The US was still trying to remain neutral. Then, despite Allied intervention, the Germans quickly seized Denmark and Norway.

On May in 1940, the blitzkrieg struck the western front in all its fury. Within six weeks the British had been driven from the Continent, and the French had been forced to surrender. The speed of the advance also surprised Hitler, who was not ready to follow his success with an invasion of the British Isles. The Luftwaffe, called upon to soften the islands and gain air superiority while preparations were made for invasion, received a stunning defeat at the hands of the small but highly competent and brave Royal Air Force.

Frustrated in the west, Hitler turned against the USSR in June 1941. In a series of brilliant military maneuvers in which several million Russians were captured, he reached the gates of Moscow in December, only to be stopped by bad weather and Russian reinforcements rushed to defend the city. Meanwhile, Mussolini sought to realize his dream of an Italian Mediterranean empire. In the late summer and fall of 1940, he launched an offensive from Libya against the British in Egypt and an invasion of Greece from Albania (which he had occupied in 1939). Both enterprises eventually proved disastrous for the Italians, and German forces were sent to their rescue. Greece fell to the Germans, but they met stiff British opposition in Africa.

In December 1941, Japan thought the time ripe to extend her empire into a Greater East Asia Co prosperity Sphere which it did very rapidly against meager opposition. The attacks on Pearl Harbor and the Philippines brought the United States into the war and greatly altered the balance of power in favor of the Allies. In December 7, 1941 is the day that shall live in infamy which was Franklin Roosevelt s speech to declare war on Japan. Japanese warplanes attacked the American naval port of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, in the early morning hours of Dec. 7, 1941, without a declaration of war. The Americans were caught unprepared as 360 Japanese planes sunk five battleships, crippled three others, destroyed 200 planes and killed over 2, 395 men (Navy, Marine Corps, Army and Civilians). The news shocked the world and America entered World War II.

Unfortunately, the Americans went Jap and Nazi crazy they created interment camps for anyone who was Japanese after Pearl Harbor, Americans had a right to fear anyone of German and Japanese descent, the Japanese especially could be brutal people and who knew what Japanese people in America might have relatives in Japan that would be interested in knowing more about their country and war dealings. Unfortunately, a lot of innocent Japanese and Germans were sent to these camps and suffered needlessly. Over 110, 000 Japanese were sent to these camps in 1942 and left till the end of the war. However, the most decorated unit in the military was the 442 nd, which was made up entirely of nisei or Japanese born in America.
