There have been many authors throughout the times, but none standout like that of the great author Edgar Allen Poe. None ever wrote so bizarre and with so much intensity, No one could ever write as he had of riches, &# 038; castles, monstrous passions, and overpowering loves. Poe is Known as the father of the American Short story and father of detective stories. Edgar Allen Poe was born on January 19, 1809, in Boston.

He was born the son of stage actors David &# 038; Elizabeth Arnold Poe. His Parents were Tubercular and both died in 1811, Poe and his 2 siblings were separated and Edgar was taken in by John Allen a wealthy merchant, whom lived in Richmond. In 1826 the Allen s enrolled Edgar into the University of Virginia. There he studied Spanish, French, Italian, and Latin. At the University of Virginia Poe became addicted to gambling and drinking, he became in debt $ 2, 000 and John Allen refused to pay his debts so Edgar had no choice but to drop out. After this he left the Allen household with no money, he made his way back to Boston.

While there Poe published a little volume of poetry called Tamerlane and Other Poems. (This book is so rare now, that a single copy has sold for $ 200, 000) On May 26, 1827, Poe joined the US Army under the name Edgar A. Perry, After 2 years he was honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant-major. He went to live with his Aunt Mrs. Maria Poe Clemm, untill he cold get into WestPoint. While at WestPoint in 1829, Poe published his 2 nd book of poetry: Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane and Minor Poems. After withdrawing from WestPoint due to lack of funding Poe published a 3 rd book of poems: Poems by Edgar Allen Poe Second Edition.

In 1832, while Poe was yet again staying at his Aunts he began to write pose tales. 5 of these appeared in the Philadelphia Saturday Courier. Poe s foster father John Allen died in 1834 leaving poe nothing in his will. Poe held the position of editor of the Southern Literary Messenger for Thomas W. White, in Richmond until 1837.

During this time, Poe married his younger cousin Virginia Clemm in Richmond on May 16, 1836. Poe Published The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym in 1838, The conchologies s First Book, in 1839, Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque, in 1840. The Prose Romances of Edgar Allen Poe in 1843, Tales, in 1845, and also The Raven and other Poems, in 1845. After leaving the Messanger Poe went to find a job in New York accompanied by his wife, and Aunt. With No luck in the big apple he traveled to Philadelphia where he lived for 6 years where his wife suffered the first of her hemorrhages.

Edgar was the editor for Burton's Gentelmen Magazine &# 038; Gratis, while in Philly. After being let go from those places he decided to give New York one last shot, ther he was the editor of N. P. Willis s Evening Mirror, and owner of the Broadway Journal which was closed up because of lack of money. Virginia died Jan 30, 1847 in NYC... After this he went through 4 women of whom he was engaged.

In 1848 he came out with his last book Eureka: A Prose Poem. Edgar Allen Poe died in Baltimore on October 7, 1849 due to circumstances unknown, he was last quoted as saying on his death bed I wish to god somebody would blow my damned brains out. Poe is now buried next to Virginia Clemm, &# 038; Mrs. Clemm in Westminster Churchyard in Baltimore.
