I. A debate is going on in our country today that is more debatable than any other of which I know. It is the issue of abortion. There are many positions regarding this procedure, its morality, and the circumstances and way in which it should be performed. A. Some say that every woman has the right to terminate her pregnancy at any time for any reason because an unwanted pregnancy is an "invasion of the womans rights 1.

These people believe that this "useful" life must be distinguished from other forms of life, such as the unborn fetus. Some today may still hold to the clearly wrong position that a fetus cannot be considered living. This has been very proved to be false, for fetuses have been born very prematurely and still survived. 2. The only things necessary for a fetus to become an adult are the same things needed for a newborn baby to become an adult, things such as food, warmth, protection, and time. B. Then, there are those that are opposed to abortion.

Even this position is split into different views. Some say that abortions can be performed in cases of rape, incest, or endangerment of the mother's life. Others say that abortions should not be performed unless the life of the mother is in danger. 1. The position that I hold is that abortion, defined as the abrupt, intentional, termination of the life of an unborn child by a human being, is absolutely wrong under nearly any and every circumstance. 2. I also believe that abortion should be made illegal in nearly all cases. I have arrived at this conclusion through the information that I have studied and through my opinion of this material.

Given the facts of the issue, many religious beliefs prevent people from holding any other position than pro-life. II. The termination of the life of a fetus is the same as the termination of the life of a newborn baby. A. I disagree with the assertion of those that hold to the "useful" life doctrine, that is, that life that is considered less useful is worth less, and can, therefore, according to the Supreme Court, be terminated. 1. Any person who considers themselves to be a Christian must refuse to accept this or is contradicting their belief, which teaches that all life is created in God's image and is, consequently, of infinite value, with no one life being any more "useful" than another life.

B. If we accept these basic assumptions, then it should be clear why there should be no exception of abortion in cases of rape or incest. It is not to minimizing these crimes or ignore the rights of the victim, but rather because, by killing an unborn child, we are creating another victim. 1. If the woman does not wish to keep the child, then there are other options, with which I am sure everyone knows. 2. By allowing abortion in the cases of rape and incest, we make it possible for a women who became pregnant in the normal means to claim the she was a rape victim simply so that she can abort the child. In this way laws could and would be used as an escape for a woman's own irresponsibility. 3.

I believe that we should punish the criminals for such acts, not the innocent, defenseless baby. C. The case of the life of the mother being in danger is a different matter. The situation where the mother will die if the baby were delivered is very rare. However, if this circumstance should arise, I very cautiously support the possibility of an abortion. 1. Limited knowledge of childbirth leads me to believe that there is only one condition where the mother's life is truly in danger from a to term pregnancy: that is when the developing fetus grows in the tube, before getting to the womb.

If the child continues to develop, it will cause the tube to rupture, causing such serious internal damage that the mother will nearly always die. 2. In this case, I believe abortion should be allowed, but only if other medical means are not possible. That is, I believe other medical options should be explored before the "solution" of abortion is chosen. However it could be a possibility in the future to place the child in an alternate environment to fully develop.

If that indeed is the case, I say, allow abortion now, but work to provide an alternative. III. Some people believe that abortion is wrong, but they do not believe that it should be made illegal. A. Of the most basic duties of government is the protection of innocent life.

Since an unborn child is a perfect example of innocent life, it follows that law should protect it. Liberal thought today is that it is the duty of government to protect only "useful" life. 1. When one begins to distinguish between "useful" and "useless" or "not as useful" life, an obvious question presents itself: who is to determine what is useful and what is not? Hitler, when he took control of the German government, eliminated much of what he considered useless life, which included the aged, the handicapped, and certain races. 2. The Supreme Court has decided that a fetus is useless life.

Jack Kevorkian apparently believes that painful or diseased life is useless. Others would no doubt have there own ideas about what constitutes "useful" life. It is the position of any religious person that all life is in God's image and is therefore useful. B.

Can you, in good conscious, and after having read the words, "Thou shalt not kill, " and, "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them, " believe that ending the life of a human being before that being has even left its mother's womb could ever be acceptable?
