Amy tan s vision of an ideal women differs from the two different time periods, in the first story involving June, she depicts an ideal women of that time period as being independent and relying on herself, but as in the case of the other stories the children had lots of respect for their parents and did exactly as their parents told them to do. In Junes case she did have lots of respect for her parents but not as much as An-Mei and Lindo Jong. For example on page 14 she is explaining her arrival at the Hsus s house for the Joy Luck Club meeting, she is disrespecting her elders by showing up to the meeting late and interrupting by the way her father draws attention to her. In my family if I were to interrupt an important meeting at my house by walking in and having drawn all the attention to my self, I would definitely get a good slap in the face by my mom or at least get yelled at for a couple of hours. Because in my household it is very disrespectful to interrupt your elders, and in this case it creates a bad name for the family. In discussing the second time period in the stories told by An-Mei and Lindo Jong it seems that the women in that time had much more respect for their elders.

But these women were still children with much respect for their elders. Unlike June she was not disrespecting her elders in a big way but still not showing the respect a thirty-six year old women should be giving in a minority family. As an-Mei described in her story she showed much respect to her elders even though she and her brother were treated like garbage by her aunt and even her grandmother. One example of their foul treatment by their family is when an-Mei's brother is pushed against the fence of their house by his own aunt and is spat in the face and told that he is worthless and that they both are a waste of skin. Besides all of the abuse they took from their family the big mistreatment was when Popo told an-Mei that her mother was a ghost and that she was a concubine, which is the most horrible thing you can tell a twelve or thirteen year old, it s like saying hey guess what your mom is a slut. Even with all of the abuse that these kids received from their family they still did not show any disrespect towards their elders, because of the way they were brought up to appreciate the knowledge that the elders beheld.

And last but not least Lindo Jong was the wife figure in the story because she was the one to be married to the person she hadn t even met yet. From this it shows that she was told what to do as in many of the cases of minority families. And due to the arranged marriage at such an early age she was told that if she did not act like the perfect wife, as in to take care of the mother in law the husband and care for them until their dying days her marriage with Tyan-yu would be broken off and shame would befall her family. Like most girls growing up in a minority family, she did not want to disgrace her family name, and because of this she was told how to act and what to say her entire life.

So as Amy Tan explains her story from generation to generation the three different women were not that different, because in all three stories all of the girls wanted to do one thing and that is to keep their family name clean and respectful.
