From the looks of the moon I could judge it was past midnight. The sky was very dark and the weather was very windy. The rustling of trees constantly caught my attention as I rode by on my horse. The rhythmic thumps of the hoofs beat straight into my mind causing a hypnotic trance, and yet I had one thing on my mind arrive home safely. Upon reaching the center of the wooded region, I spotted something on the ground. I maneuvered the horse to stop in an attempt to see what it was.
Lying on the earth was a goat that looked like it had been ill for a while. I decided to take it with me in order to bring home at least a feast. It took me a few minutes to saddle the goat on the back of the horse before I began my journey home. Everything was going very well until I marked that the horse was beginning to move slower than before. He would not accelerate or even try to gain speed.
As the journey progressed, so the slower the horse moved. I also noticed that the front of the horse began to rise up, which meant that the rear was falling. I had never seen such actions happen in an animal like this one. With sheer instincts I decided to look behind me to see what was going on and what I saw I could never forget. The goat had transformed into these weird looking beast of some sort. It had the horns of a rhino and the feet of a zebra.
Its hind legs were clenched into the ground with great bear like claws. I realized why the horse could not go. Physical action and instinct took over my fear as I reached over and kicked the goat off the horse and rode into the darkness. I could still hear in the back of my mind that thing saying I escaped luckily through its grasp.
When my grandfather told me this story exactly as written, the first word that came into my mind was Jinn. A Jinni (plural Jinn) in Islamic beliefs is a supernatural spirit below the level of angels and devils. Nursi states that there are three classes of Jinn: Girl (treacherous spirits of changing shape), ifrit (diabolic, evil spirits), and sila (treacherous spirits of invariable form) constitute classes of Jinn. (25) He also states that Jinn are beings of flame who are capable of assuming animal or human form and are said to dwell in all conceivable inanimate objects stone, trees, ruins underneath the earth, in that air and fire. (33) Along with Nursi, Defeat states that they are all free from physical restraints: Jinn delight in punishing humans for any harm done to them, intentionally or unintentionally, and are said to be responsible for many diseases and all kinds of accidents; however, those human beings knowing the proper magical procedure can exonerate or exploit the Jinn to their advantage. This existence was knowledge in Islam, which indicated that they, like human beings, would have to face eventual salvation or damnation. (55) Thus Jinn have entered local Muslim stories by the way of Koranic descriptions. Jinn according to Arab stories came down from heaven in the time before Adam (pbuh). The Jinn are usually invisible to normal human beings.
They apparently want a great influence on earth. Much of the magic used in Arab countries concerns the Jinn (protection spells against, or spells to call them up), as Nursi states: Ifrit in Islamic culture is a class of infernal Jinn noted for strength. It is an enormous creature of smoke, which lives underground and frequent ruins. An Ifrit may either be a believer or a non-believer and good or evil. The appearance of this term in the Koran and Hadith (eyewitness narratives recounting Mohammed's (pbuh) words and actions) is always in the phrase Ifrit and probably means rebellious. (45) In order to bring more sensibility into this phenomenal and yet very eerie subject, a few more stories based on some aspect of truth will help to enlighten the minds of readers following the description of such creatures.
One night in Afghanistan, after my grandfather finished reading the Koran, he turned the light off and locked the chain on his side of the door. He then went to lay down on his bed. A few minutes later my grandfather heard a type of rattle. When he looked up, he realized someone had taken the chain off the door.
He thought that was impossible since he was alone in his room. In great panic he stood up and placed the chain back on the door and quickly ran back to his bed. A few minutes later he heard the same rattle and decided to look and see what is was. To his amazement he saw that the chain was moving by itself. Immediately after that, the door began to open. My grandfather lay on his bed; too terrified to move.
A few seconds after the door opened, a few little bodies of some sort began to appear in his room. These beings began to move closer to my grandfather until they were resting on his stomach. He told me that they looked sort of like small dwarfs. My grandfather said their faces were too hideous to look at. In all this fear he closed his eyes and began to recite a prayer, which fortunately helped him.
In a split second they were all gone. When I was a small child I knew a relative of mine here in New York City that supposed to have had one of these Jinn under her spell. Fortunately I never decided to encounter her or be anywhere near her. Unfortunately though I have a story of someone who did get on her bad side. My cousin, who is still with me to this day told me of a encounter he had with her in a persons house. He said that one day his mother wanted to go to her relatives house and so he decided to tag along.
Upon reaching there he saw a couple of his friends and decided to have fun. He also said that she kept yelling at me to calm down, but being the kid I was, I didnt listen to her. My cousin said that a few minutes later he heard his name in his ear and turned around to see who was calling him. To his bewilderment that lady was looking at him. Her complexion changed into a being he didnt know. Her eyes were fiery red and her facial appearance started to melt.
He ran into his mothers lap and placed his face down crying, she is a monster. Everyone there couldnt believe what he was saying, besides nothing seemed unusual to them, but when he looked up he kept seeing that hideous face and began to cry again. My cousin said that never in his lifetime would he ever bother another person or get near her. His luck, she died a few years later.
One summer day not long ago, I decided to go to sleep a little early after practicing soccer. The night was beginning to grow and the moon began to show. I looked out my window for a little while before I fell asleep. I dreamt I was in the middle of a street riding a bicycle. While riding the front wheel of my bike came off and I fell to the ground. My foot was broken and I started yelling to the people next to me, but nobody would look or listen to me.
Then I decided to move but I couldnt move. There I was; motionless, speechless, and helpless. At that point I realized I was dreaming so I decided to wake up. The dream stopped but I couldnt open my eyes.
I was awake lying on my bed, but I couldnt open my eyes. Then, I tried to move my hands and legs, but I just could not move. I was awake lying on my bed unable to move or open my eyes. That is when I started to suffocate. I couldnt breathe and in a last desperate hope, I decided to recite a prayer. The second I finished reciting the prayer, I felt some force run through my body and straight out of my head and then my hair stood up and I had goose bumps.
