In John F. Kennedys book Profiles in Courage, he defines political courage as ones need to maintain his own respect for himself and because of his conscience, his personal standards of ethics that is stronger than the pressures of public disapproval and his course was the best one, that it out weighed his fear of public reprisal. In my personal opinion of political courage, I believe it is doing what one feels is right besides what opinions or desires other might have. I believe my definition of political courage is similar to Kennedys in that political courage comes from within, not from the wants of others. Kennedy feels when one is faced with an important decision; one must look beyond public disapproval and look inside to make the correct decision. In Kennedys book he says some (Senators) demonstrated courage through their unyielding devotion to absolute principal.

One person who did this was Edmund Ross. Edmund Ross was the deciding vote in the impeachment trial of President Johnson. Facing pressures from his own political party and the state he represented to impeach Johnson, Ross voted against the impeachment. Ross felt that if the president were impeached, it would show that our country does not have faith in the leader it elected and would make our country weaker. Kennedy stated in his book that it is on national issues, on matters of conscience that challenge party and regional loyalties that the test of courage is presented. I believe the actions of Edmund Ross are perfect examples of what Kennedy meant by courage.

In Profiles in Courage, Kennedy stated that, living in a true democracy, we put our faith that the people will not simply elect men who will represent their views ably and faithfully, but also elect men who will exercise their conscientious judgment, faith that the people will not condemn those whose principles lead them to unpopular course, but will reward courage respect and honor to what is recognizably right. I believe that his definition of political courage is well defined. I also believe that political courage could be used in other ways as well. For example, I believe that Jefferson Davis, who if Im correct was the president of the Confederacy. Davis along with every other member of the Confederacy also displayed political courage. At the time, they felt the demands of the industrialized north should not be put on the mainly agriculture driven south.

Members of the Confederacy showed political courage by fighting for what they felt was right. Even though at the time it seemed that what the Confederacy was doing was wrong, the people of the south put faith in the leaders and complied by their wishes in fighting a civil war. If one applies political courage to the Senate today, it would have a different meaning that what it held for those in Profiles in Courage. In my opinion, what would define political courage today is looking out for the best interest of the nation rather than that of the state. It seems that too many congressmen care about being re-elected, rather than making improvements in their own government. Even though this is just my opinion, there are not too many senators who go above and beyond of the call of duty.

When answering the question, what would be the consequences if every senator displayed acts of political courage, I would have to say that it would make it difficult for the senate to accomplish its goals. The reason why I say this is because senators are individuals of high egos. This would make it difficult for them to agree on any issue because one would always be trying to prove the other one wrong. Kennedy stated in his book that for the American system of Government could not function if every man in a position of responsibility approached each problem as a problem in higher mathematics, with a limited regard for sectional needs and human shortcomings.

This is a difficult question to answer because not every decision takes and act of courage. On simple laws that are not going to affect the daily lives of the people, I do believe that senators should just practice sound judgment. On matters that are going to affect the nation as a whole, I do believe that some senators should stand up and express what they believe in. Issues that require one to act out with political courage comes when the security of the nation is in jeopardy. I feel this because this is an issue that affects the nation as a whole. When looking at todays society, I do not believe that there are a lot of political leaders acting out in political courage because there is no issue for them to display political courage.

Many of the problems that the senators are faced with today are domestic issues mainly dealing with he control of handguns. The only possibility I see of today of a senator acting out in political courage is if he tries to make the sales of handguns illegal. This would take courage because many would believe that it is a violation of our constitutional right to bear arms. I believe if a senator did try to make a law against handguns, it would not be because he wants to restrict the peoples right to bear arms, but he fears for the others who are victims of handguns. In my opinion, this would be political courage because he would be trying to make a difference in a way that could possible help the nation as a whole.
