A Rose for Emily It was very well known in the small town of Jefferson that Miss. Emily Grierson was from a very high class in society. As Miss Emily started falling from her pedestal the whole town enjoyed watching. They liked watching the tradition, a duty, and a care, a sort of hereditary obligation upon the town; they enjoyed Miss Emily Grierson's fall from riches to rags. Growing up Miss Emily was always looked upon as a child from an upper class. Emily and her family were very well known and talked about around Jefferson.
After her father died Miss. Emily started to fall. The town watched closely as Miss. Emily became of public interest.
Miss Emily turned into a hermit in her eyesore house that was giving off a foul odor of something dead. As neighbors complained of this horrible smell that was coming from her home, nobody had the heart to tell her that she smelled bad, but could talk about it behind her back. Nobody wanted to bother Miss Emily. At this point in the story the narrator gives the reader the impression that the whole town is bearing witness to the behavior of a heroine, about whom they have ambivalent attitudes, ambiguously pressed (Mail 1988).
The narrator as a representative of the townspeople he feels a compulsion to tell the story of a woman who represents something important to the community (Akers 250). Black voices are excluded from this collective voice as it speaks out of old and new generations (Akers 250). Even though Miss Emily was a child during the Civil War, she represents to the people generations past and present the old Deep South of the Delta cotton plantation aristocracy (Riggs). Early the narrator invokes such concepts as tradition, duty, hereditary obligation, and custom, suggesting a perpetuation in the community consciousness of those old values (Riggs). As soon as the townspeople said Poor Emily the whispering began.
The town believed she carried her head high enough- even when they believed that she had fallen. To them it was as if Miss. Emily demanded more than ever her dignity as the last Grierson in the town of Jefferson. As Miss. Emily started becoming the talk of the town more and more each day, the people in the town started feeling sorry for her.
They started remembering back to old lady Wyatt; her great aunt that had gone completely crazy, and the people started sensing the same would happen to Miss Emily. At last the town believed and came to the conclusion that the Grierson's held themselves a little to high for what they really were. Miss Emily falling from upper class to lower class became the gossip among the women in the town. When Miss.
Emily went to buy the rat poison, everyone in the town came to the conclusion that she was going to kill herself. They all believed that by her killing herself it would be the best thing. The ladies of the town talked about Emily and Homer, and some began to say that Emily and Homer were a disgrace to the town, and a bad example to the young people. The men in the town did not want to get involved and interfere with Miss. Emily's life, but the ladies forced the Minister to call upon her. They watched the Negro grow old and gray until she died.
The town viewed Miss. Emily as their public interest. She was the talk of the town and made life interesting in the town of Jefferson. The public watched Miss. Emily transform from being a very important person in the town to becoming nothing. The town enjoyed watching Miss.
