Marijuana, a drug that has been studied for many decades, provides for a very controversial argument. Many people in society are aware of the harmful and long-term effects of marijuana, and therefore are strongly opposed to such a drug. However, there exists another array of opinions of which are focused heavily on the benefits of marijuana in the medical industry, as well as the pleasurable benefits that marijuana may bring to many individuals. Though there exists some evidence that marijuana could serve as a useful drug in the industry of medicine, it should not be considered for legalization because the benefits are greatly outweighed by the vast evidence that states the numerous harmful and long-term effects of marijuana. Marijuana, although now being recognized for possessing a few medical benefits, actually poses an even greater harm to its users. The pendulum of advantages and disadvantages to the legalization of marijuana clearly swings to the numerous harmful effects associated with marijuana.

Historically, marijuana has been used in the aid of treating such illnesses as anorexia, asthma, depression, and cancer. Yet, extensive research has proven marijuana to cause damages to major organs such as the brain, heart, lungs, and immune system. (1) Also, in 1992, when the federal government halted their research on the medical uses of marijuana, the drug had just about completed the requirements for a new drug approval, totally overlooking the copious number of patients that did not like the psychoactive effects of the drug. (2) In addition, marijuana imposes extremely hazardous effects upon newborn children of pot-smoking mothers. Researchers in Texas discovered that the risk of genetic damage to newborns is high if expecting mothers consume marijuana during pregnancy. The babies become considerably at risk of birth defects and cancer. Researchers also uncovered the horrible fact that blood drawn from umbilical cords of newborns in mothers who smoke cannabis suffers an enormous damage, leading to cancerous birth defects.

Not only are the newborns of such mothers affected, but the mothers themselves also possess a great increase of DNA damage. (3) The above mentioned effects are just a few of the possible harms of marijuana. As is clearly illustrated, marijuana is a very dangerous drug and therefore should not be legalized. Along with the harmful effects of marijuana, there also lurk many long-term effects that greatly prove that the legalization of marijuana is not in the best interest of the public. Every single scientific study that has been done in the last several years shows alarming increases in the toxicity and danger of using marijuana. (4) Many long-term users of marijuana have been known to develop psychological dependencies.

This is when an individual feels the need to get high and has become reliant upon the drug to satisfy his / her psychological hunger. As time passes, the user also tends to require more of the drug to reach this satisfaction. (5) Another long-term effect, claimed by prohibitionists, is the further use of marijuana and other more deadly drugs. Marijuana is commonly known as the gateway drug creating yet another reason to halt the legalization of this drug. To put another roadblock in the path of legalization, researchers have also found the regular usage of marijuana to be considerably hazardous, leading to memory, learning, and emotional disorders. (6) Adding to the list of long-term effects, the lungs of the user also take a great deal of abuse when marijuana is frequently inhaled. Effects such as emphysema, asthma, and lung cancer are just a few of the possible diseases of the lungs, which are inherited by smoking marijuana. For many more reasons, it is inevitable that the legalization of marijuana is not a very practical decision.

However, when considering the legalization of marijuana, one must not only think of the long-term effects, but the immediate effects it will impose upon our youth. In addition to the harmful and long-term effects of marijuana, drugs seem to play an enormous part in the corruption of todays youth. If marijuana were to become legalized, it would just present a greater incentive for the children to become more involved in the usage of marijuana. If society cared anything about its youth, legalization of such a drug would not even be an issue.

It is the responsibility of society to set standards, morals, and guidelines for todays youth. However, with the many campaigns that have been initiated, marijuana is only becoming more accessible to a young population who will in turn be greatly affected by such drug use. (6) Legalizing marijuana in no such manner accomplishes any of those responsibilities. Society should present a positive guide for the younger generation, and decline the legalization of marijuana. Society is trying to promote a drug-free nation. Yet, how can one accomplish such a task if marijuana is being considered asa potential legal drug?

Although marijuana may serve as a mild pain killer, or pose as some other remedy, its negative side effects greatly outweigh the positive. Effects ranging from the harmful physical damage that marijuana creates, to the possible long-term medical problems, and the influences it has upon the youth of today, clearly show the answer to the present debate of the legalization of marijuana. It should not be legalized for the sake of ourselves and for the children of the future. Bibliographweb 2. web 3. web /web 5.
