The hemp plant is arguably the most useful crop in the world. There are over 25, 000 products made from hemp and it can be grown in a wide variety of climates. So how can such a useful plant be outlawed in America? Ignorance is how. People automatically connect hemp with it s controversial cousin, marijuana.

The truth is the differences between marijuana and hemp are very distinct. Hemp and marijuana are both variations of the cannabis plant. The quality that separates the two is the Tetra Hydro Cannabinol (THC) content. Hemp has less than 1 % THC, while marijuana has 20 - 30 %.

This is because marijuana was specifically cultivated to have a high THC content. The amount of THC in hemp is so small that it would take dozens of pounds of it to even have a small affect on a person. It is humanly impossible to use hemp as a drug. One concern that many people have about the legalization of hemp is that they believe marijuana could easily be hidden in a field of hemp.

This is not true for many reasons. First, the two plants are easily distinguished. Marijuana plants are short and bushy with many leaves and is harvested for it s flowers and leaves. Hemp, however, is tall and straight, with leaves at the top of the plant and is harvested for it s stalks before flowering even occurs. Another problem with disguising marijuana in a hemp field is that the two plants would crossbreed which eliminates nearly all of the THC content in marijuana plants. Third, in Canada, where hemp farming is legal, the farmers have to get a special license to grow and the crop is checked annually for THC content.

If we enforced this in America, there would be little to no marijuana problems at hemp farms. Hemp has a great deal of history in our country also. Many well-known historical figures farmed the plant and encouraged farming of it. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln were all hemp-enthusiasts.

Most of the sails and ropes from colonist s ships were made of hemp, as were many of their maps and bibles. In 1640, the governor of Connecticut declared that, Every citizen must grow the plant. Hemp fiber is already being used for clothes. It is predicted to be the most promising crop ever. Hemp has valuable qualities as clothing material. It takes color and absorbs moisture better than cotton, is breathable and extremely durable, softens when washed, and needs little ironing.

It can also be very comfortable, contrary to what many people believe. It can be blended with cotton to create clothing with the best qualities of both materials. All of these points make for better, longer lasting clothes for the consumer. Hemp can help the environment in many ways. Our paper is made from trees, which are used up rapidly. Trees are a very important part of our ecosystem and we can t spare them.

One acre of hemp can produce as much paper as four acres of trees. Also, hemp products can replace many toxic or non-biodegradable products. Finally, hemp can be grown with no pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides, thanks to its natural resistances. Hemp oil has proved itself extremely useful in the last few years. It is used in foods, as an all-purpose lubricant, and even may be used instead of motor oil and petroleum diesel. There are hundreds of other uses for the oil.

Compared to other crops, hemp is the most lucrative. Hemp farmers can make up to $ 600 profit per acre, while wheat farmers are struggling to break even. A hemp industry in America could contribute millions of dollars and thousands of jobs. From an economic point of view, we are senseless to even consider not jumping on this opportunity. Hemp can do nothing but good for our country, yet it is still illegal.

The reason for this is that there are too many close-minded people running our country. If they would just listen to an argument for the legalization of this useful plant without bias, maybe they would realize what a good idea it is. Hemp will benefit our nation as a whole but because of ignorance, people associate it with drugs and will not even hear of legalizing it. This mindset has only hindered our country, and by now, we should have learned to consider all points before you judge something. Hemp is not marijuana.

There is no reason for it to be illegal. Hopefully, someone will realize the senselessness that has been persisting since the 1930 s and make a change, but until then, America will have to miss out on a huge opportunity.
