What is Atwood warning us about and how does she oblige us to consider it? Fundamentally, Atwood is warning us about the decrease in fertility due to pollution, food and basically the way that we live our lives. Other observations and warnings sprout from this and from our society. Essentially, the first technique used to engage the reader and make them consider the warnings is the genre; science fiction. As this ultimately is an enlarged reflection of today and it has a function of suggesting how our world could turn out to be. There are such a range of techniques used by Atwood to encourage the reader to consider warnings that focusing in on one main device may successfully portray the depth in which Handmaids Tale can be analysed.

Therefore the focus of this essay is language. Firstly, the novel is written in present tense which immediately makes the science fiction touch base with the reader, it is real and can be seen as happening right now. This is also portrayed through the description of senses and actions, which bring Offred back to the moment the motor turns. Also, there are quite a lot of gaps within each chapter visually representing the space in which Offred lives and is not telling the story- a silence in the tape-a recognition of the time gap.

Similarly the reader may feel obliged to consider the situation like Offred, we are thrown into a foreign world experiencing perhaps the same sense of confusion, as there wasn t even an enemy you could put your finger on. So inevitably, the reader is left to question how they would respond to the Gileadean society and the rules within it. Alongside this, is the format, as we find out for certain in the Historical Notes that the diary was in fact saved as a compilation of tapes. This has immense influence on the style of the novel, as it is so colloquial. I walk around to the back door, open it, go in this style encourages the reader to engage more with Offred. The reader can oddly feel at ease in this completely unsettling society.

Perhaps this has the effect of startling the reader even more as at times the reader just receives matter of fact descriptions of situations her legs apart, I lie between them, my head on her stomach This is startling due to the familiarity in Offred s tone. As the society has been up and running for quite a while Offred is not obliged to consider the oppression in which she is experiencing or how wrong the society is in which case, we are. So along the main theme and warning of fertility, there is the inclusion of fertile and infertile and sexual descriptions / images via the language. For example Offred fingers the egg she received for breakfast, it s warm. These specific descriptions make even the smallest of events Offred s breakfast, significant and symbolic of fertility and the restraint of sexual and sensual desires. In this sense, the reader can not escape the subject of fertility and is encouraged to consider that if they were a Handmaid and therefore a symbol of fertility then fertility would undoubtedly rule their lives and drive them either further down the scale or to death.

There seems to be a warning of power in the Handmaids Tale. As whoever it is who has the ultimate power in this novel (another essay) manages to twist the bible and religion to suit their needs and take away the freedom of speech and language. As in this society the story of Rachel and Jacob is taken very literally Give me children or else I die. The sick humour in these details does oblige the reader to perhaps see the situation as an exaggeration but simultaneously observe the small detail and recognize it s potential to be twisted. Furthermore, Atwood seems to warn us that indeed power and control can go unnoticed until it is too late like the historical notes, the reader is unaware that this novel has been tampered with and that the chapters were a creation from Professor and not Offred, until the end. But it is the humour in this section that obliges us to have the ability to mock these people in power, in the university of Day nunavut (deny none of it).

At the same time it provoke the reader to consider similar powerful models in their society who are patronising and pompous: Out job is not to censure but to understand (followed by an applause) and perhaps question their underlying power that they hold over them. There is humourous language in the story itself as briefly touched upon, through Offred who most of the time has an aim of entertaining herself, pretending I am a tree. This and the exaggerated jokes and references to our society encourage the reader to be warned of the ridiculous elements that already exist in our world and the ridiculous result in which it could turn out to be like. For example, the people in the club that she visits with the commander has whores all dressed in costume baby doll pyjamas and bunny outfits, which is evident today. In conclusion, just through the language the reader can be aware of the very real issues that relate to today. And perhaps the most provoking line is left till last, when the reader is just about to finish and close the book, the question that combines all of the other considerations in the novel to provoke a strong response: Are there any questions? 341
