Hamlet is a tragic play that displays the ways in which man can destroy his own life and mind. It portrays a man who becomes trapped in his own thoughts and, this in turn, creates a standstill with his problems, and his world. The way Hamlet handles the troubles he is faced with allows them to grow and to create more. He waits for the answers to come to him. He does not make up his own mind. He ignores all of his instincts and does not act when first discovering that his own father had been murdered.

Instead he digs deep into himself searching for answers which he already knows. He overanalyze's the situation and feels he must find more ways to confirm facts that he already knows are true. While doing this he can lose the meaning he wants to find. In his mind he creates more obstacles, weaknesses and an entirely different situation.

He searches in himself for morals and beliefs that will result in a happy ending that just will not happen. He spends his time asking why these things happen to him. He would not accept his own fate and the way that things are. His life is lived too much in his head and not enough in the real world that surrounds him.

He is afraid of reality and knows that he can control his own reality in his mind. Hamlet s indecision was most certainly what cost him his life. It also destroyed the lives of the people that surround him. Was he able to control it, or was it something so strong inside of him that could not be held back? Is this a man that should be blamed for these events, or should pity be felt for him? Should it be blamed on such a great force that fate cannot be controlled.

So many people have hidden in their minds obsessions, traits and disorders that will manipulate their lives. They can grow and fester to poison wonderful minds. The one thing that can truly drive a person crazy is themselves. The events that occur only happen to teach human minds about how, they themselves, work. They are to see if man can handle his own thoughts and not allow them to defeat him. At one point in the play Hamlet states 1 What a piece of work is a man!

How noble in reason, how infinite in faculties, in form and moving how express and admirable... Man delights me not It is true that human beings have many luxuries and strengths. In an ideal universe, or a made up materialistic world, these advantages would keep a person sane. But because of a persons greater ability to think that world is filled with many more conflicts that have to be dealt with.

Their thoughts can become so complex and so intertwined it will drive them to a point of madness. Apart form Hamlet driving himself crazy, the people he was closest to had great effects on his mind. They showed him what his actions did to others and they presented different ways that human thoughts can work. Ophelia was a woman who did truly love Hamlet. She loved him even as his mind took over and drove him crazy. He treated her with such a harshness and coldness but it did not change her feelings.

They were so strong that they would not fade. This is what killed Ophelia. Her undying love was something Hamlet could not handle. It was something so sweet and so simple he wanted to get it out of his bitter and complex world. He pushed her away. He set out to hurt her in an attempt to destroy the feelings that they had for each other, and that would always be there.

He wanted to get the last part of joy out of his tortured mind. Hamlet says to Ophelia 2 Get thee to a nunnery. He thought love was a terrible thing and did not want her or himself to ever experience it again. Had he not loved her he would not of hurt her so much.

She made him love and this was a simple happiness, something he did not want to believe could exist. Gertrude was also a woman who played a large part to Hamlet s undecided madness. She was the one that made him question so much. She caused him to think and to pry. She made him play his thoughts over and over again. She caused him the most pain.

He loved his mother more then anything but hated what she did. He found hr to be weak and blinded because of Claudius. He became remarkably angry that his mother had been so disrespectful to his father. He wanted to destroy and hurt her but his and his father s love is what stopped him. At one point in the play Hamlet says 3 It is not, nor it cannot come to good. But break my heart, for I must hold my tongue.

It ate him alive to hold back but he was doing out of his love for his mother. It made him insane to protect a women with such misunderstood actions. Hamlet did not know what to believe and just did not want to. He would think one thing and the next minute think another. His thoughts were going in circles and he was not getting anywhere. He was not moving forward.

There were many different ways he could have dealt with his problems. The trouble was he could not decide which way to do it. That is what killed him and so many others. Horatio was a true friend that could see all of this.

He stuck by Hamlet for the entire play. He was the only person that could understand Hamlet. He knew what was going on inside Hamlet s head. He did not interfere with anything and was just there for him.

He was the one who knew the true thoughts Hamlet was thinking. He was the only one who survived and the one that could tell the truth of this story. Hamlet was struggling and fighting with himself throughout the entire story. He was stuck and trapped in his own thought. His pain is only a sign of his intelligence and humanity. He was a great man with a complex mind.

He just could not overcome the battles that occurred within his head. 4 Happiness is for the beautiful body, sorrow is for the beautiful soul.
