A director runs the show. He or she makes every vital decision on how to act, where to stand and even when to breath. The director is the backbone of the production, without one it would fall with out any guidance. they get paid good money to do it appropriately loves to do it as well.

The director of A Streetcar Named Desire bothered me a little bit. For some reason I didnt like how the book or the movie was presented. It lacked quality acting and sincere emotion. There was very little excitement. The most exciting thing that happened was the fight between Stella and Stanley. If we are excited by domestic violence and weak souls allowing it to occur then there is something wrong.

Maybe because I am a guy I felt so far away from enjoying a good drama but I as would have added some more lively characters and maybe some real action. This comments are all honest but there could just me something wrong with me if I have so many critical comments on such an American classic. Unfortunately this is because the youth today (myself included) have been brainwashed by Sylvester Stallone and other ass kicking heroes of todays theaters. This draws us away from what is truly good acting. Well, that is life today. I would definitely make some changes if I were director.

First of I would change the emotions given off from the main characters. In both the book and the movie the emotions were expected and in a way almost predictable. The characters would fit a mold seen to commonly by todays people. We would understand who they were and where they come from and that would rarely change through out the book. People come to plays to be surprised my unexpected emotions and new personalities. But for this project I chose to look through the directors eyes to see what he chose to do with characters whether I like it or not.

I analyzed each person figured out Stella was seen to be sort of a low point as a character though she had a large impact on the book. Everything revolved around her but she never did anything outrageous. She was made to be a forgiving character. Almost too forgiving. She was beaten by her lover. This was wrong!

She time after time would run back to Stanley without looking back. This troubled me. I thought that the director made it a point to do this though. The director made Stella weak so that Stanley and Blanche could almost use her to get at eachother without actually coming out and saying things.

She was made weak so that she would never notice what was going on in the play. Stanley was probably the most exciting and the reason to making this play somewhat readable. He was very simply a typical man in the stereotypical sense. He dressed like trash even when he attempted to look nice. Women think of men as having a one track mind geared toward sex. Well that theory was proved to true with this man.

He loved sex. He would screw up with Stella and realize immediately that without her he has no sex. This is why he goes crying back like a dog who is trying to make up for eating his masters dinner. An obvious answer is there is no excuse for how he acts but having such an easy wife helps him to get away with it. He has no respect for women and shows this quite evidently through his actions toward Stella and his words to Blanche.

The director through in this personality to spice up the play as best as it could be spiced. He added some uneasiness to Blanche is the female character that gave the story a bit on an edge. She after all was the main reason this all really happened and is agreeably the main character. This is all true eventhough she is sort of bland. It is was important for the director to show how she is always depressed and and seems to be hiding something. This allows the watchers and the readers to get a sense of mystery in the play.

It makes us think that there is more information about Blanche and her past that we will find out later in the play. Another key element put in by the director as a sort of symbolism was that Blanches favorite drink was Southern Comfort. Its makes it ironic because the whole reason Blanche goes down to Louisiana with her sister in the first place is to get away from her past. To find some comfort. This play is obviously very out dated for readers now days.

things that were once risqu are now just a part of life. To be able to see this we need to think back of what life was like when the play was written. After doing this we see that the director made huge steps to make this play a hit. Whether it was appropriate or not was his choice and he took the chance and it worked out for the good. I would obviously make changes as the director of a new streetcar but fitting with the times the director did an incredible job mixing emotions with showing physical feelings and symbols.
