Womens Inequalities When you think of a CEO of a company or of world political leaders, do you think of a man or of a woman? Many, if not most of us, see these positions as being held by men. In this essay, I will explain why women are still not equal to men. In the first paragraph I will discuss inequalities that happen in the workplace. The second section will show the differences that occur within the athletic world. Thirdly, I will explain the differences in education and home life.

The United States still seems to be reluctant, to grant true equality, even though we are approaching the twenty-first century, women are still not equal to men. In the workplace, women do not receive the same benefits that men do. Some women do the same job, for the same amount of hours, and still do not receive the same pay for their work. Is there a specific reason behind this? No, it is just one of the many inequalities that goes on the job. As pointed out in the essay by Susan Faludi, Blame it on Feminism, women earn less.

The average womens paycheck is twenty percent less than their male counterparts. Men with only high school educations make more than some women who have graduated college. Most women are still working the traditional female jobs: secretaries, teachers, and nurses for example. Construction work, engineering, and doctors, are considered out of our reach and mens jobs. Women are very capable of doing these jobs, but most times when applying for a mans job are not taken seriously.

American women are more likely not to receive health insurance and twice as likely not to draw pension then American men. They face the biggest gender-biased pay gap in the world. When you turn on the television to watch a sports game, is it mens or womens? More often than not it is a mens game. Men dominate the sports world from their salaries to their funding.

There are few professional womens sports teams, and the salaries these women receive are very low compared to the mens average. While men make hundreds of thousands or even millions, women are struggling to make fifty thousand. The average salary for a woman in the WNBA is $ 37, 500. A big deal was made this year about the United States womens soccer team winning the championship. A lot of the press was directed towards one thing-the fact that after the winning goal was scored by Brandi Chastain, she took off her shirt and swung it around her head, just as a man does.

Some people found it wrong that she ran around in her sports bra. That move brought more attention to womens soccer than it ever had before. Talk shows and comedy persons mocked her repeatedly. I saw it on at least three shows myself. This is the most media coverage women in sports have seen in a long time.

College womens teams will only make the news on a very rare occasion. In order to help women, a bill, Title IX, was passed in 1972 so high school and college girls could get a fair share of the budget. Title IX states, No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or any activity receiving federal financial assistance. For every dollar spent on womens sports, three have been spent on mens.

Women represent more than half of the student body, but only make up about two-fifths of all college athletes. Title IX needs to be enforced so colleges can not turn a blind eye towards the situation or adequate funding needs to be provided. Studies show that girls who have the chance to participate in athletics have higher graduation rates, feel all over better about themselves, and are less likely to do drugs or get pregnant. Despite the advancements that have been made possible under Title IX, womens sports have not caught up to mens sports, let alone take more than their fair share.

A womans own home is the last place inequality should exist, yet it does exist. Women perform more than half of the household chores. I see more and more women doing the stereotypic male jobs for example, mowing the lawn, taking out the garbage, or raking the leaves however when was the last time you saw a man cleaning the bathroom, cooking dinner for his family, or vacuuming? Ms. Faludi also states that the only change now is that middle-class men think they do more around the house. Women also have their reproductive rights controlled.

Everyone wants to have a say in what a pregnant woman should do with her baby. As of 1991, only ten states had laws mandating arrest for domestic violence abuse. People do not want to become involved because it is not their problem. They think the husband is going to stop and things will become good again. Women can now do virtually everything in life without men by their side, so why are they still complaining that they are ranked below men. This opposite side is shared by many.

Women have it made. The fight has largely been won and they have so many opportunities. How many men can take time off work for paternity leave? How many men have ever thought about not working, depending on their spouse, and staying at home taking care of the family? These are all amenities that women enjoy in life. Equal rights have now gone from the women needing them to the men being the lesser sex.

There are so many laws that make life easier for women. Employers and schools are now required to hire and accept women. Their time has come. Women need to accept all of what they have because they are exactly the same rights that men have. In this paper I have shown how women differ from men. They differ in everything from sports and education to their home life, women are unequal.

Steps need to be taken provide equality for the whole nation. Maybe not to long after our century mark, everyone in this country, male and female, will have the same opportunities and chances for advancement in every aspect. Bibliography:
