Great Expectations which was set in Victorian England tells the story of a young boys struggles in life. Pip, a young orphan who lives with his older sister is seated the cemetery looking at his parents graves when Magwitch an escaped convict attacks Pip and orders him to bring food and a file for his leg iron. Pip obeys, and gets everything the convict asks for, but soon the convict is captured, but he protects Pip and says that he stole everything himself. Pip soon goes to a play at the Satis House where he meets Mrs. Havisham who was left at the altar on her wedding day and now wears an old wedding dress everywhere she goes. While at the Satis House Pip meets a young girl named Estella who treats him coldly, but Pip can t help his attraction to Estella and one day hopes that he will become a wealthy gentleman so he might have a chance with her.

One day when Pip is at work with his brother-in-law the town blacksmith a lawyer, Jaggers comes bearing strange news: Pip has received a large fortune! Pip assumes Mrs. Havisham is the benefactor and hopes that Pip will marry Estella. Several years go by until Pip finds out that Magwitch the convict was actually the benefactor, he was also the father of Estella. Pip is so grateful that he tries to help Magwitch escape from England but is captured.

His fortune is taken away. Magwitch is sentenced to death. Pip runs into Estella at the Satis House and finds out that her cruelness and hatred have turned into love. The two leave the garden and are never separated again. Setting was a major theme of this work, the story was set in Victorian England. This was a time when there were the rich and the poor there was a no middle class.

There was also the educated and the uneducated, everyone had some classification. Pip was just an orphan rat in society, he would grow up to be nothing. Pip had a dream, he wanted to be something he had good morals and him being a poor orphan just added to the struggles he was already facing. The setting was cold and in a time of change. The setting is one of the earliest ways for the reader to get a mental picture of what and where the characters are coming from. The story usually revolves around the setting, each different setting has some sort of importance.

The characters in this story also played a major role. There were many characters and each had a different personality. Pip was a young innocent boy who was a orphaned and is struggling to make something of his life. His love Estella is an all around tramp, she was brought up to treat males badly. Mrs. Havisham was the one who taught her this, she did this because she was left on the alter her wedding day.

Magwitch is an escaped convict with very good morals he helps out Pip in his pursuit to become gentlemen, with all of these characters you are led to believe they are something that they are not. Each character represents a different way of life and different morals. These all helped make the story easier to comprehend. Great Expectations is a classic novel that is extremely worthy of high later merit. Charles Dickens is a brilliant author who wrote many award winning novels, Great Expectations had a valuable lesson and is a later work of art.

This book deserves to be on any list it is a great book for all ages.
