Love is an extremely important aspect 5 of our society today. Just about everyone wants to fall in love, get married, and have a family. NO one wants to be alone. We all want someone to be there for us.

Someone to care for us, and we want to care for someone as well. Some people have a very easy time finding that someone to love. For others its not as easy. Some people spend years searching for a true love. S 9 ome still have to wait once they find that love. Some make extremely difficult sacrifices for their love.

In any case love is a very hard concept to comprehend, and it can be very difficult to obtain. Sometimes the life long struggle for love, ends in tragedy, and leaves people even lonelier then when they started. This struggle can often lead to an incomplete ending in some novels. Two novels which have a focus around a search for love, and incomplete endings due to love, are: The Great Gatsby, by F.

Scott Fitzgerald, and Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neal Hurston. In both books, there is a struggle for love. Both characters that are looking for love make great sacrifices for this love, and even have to change some aspect of their lives, or even themselves for this love. In The Great Gatsby, Gatsby is madly in love with a girl named Daisy. He had fallen in love with her early on in his life. He could not pursue his love at that time because of their social differences.

He then devotes his life to gaining great wealth just to impress Daisy. He moves right across the bay from her, just to be near her. He throws these huge extravagant parties, in hopes that she will show up. He devotes his whole life to his pursuit of Daisy, and his pursuit of love.

In Their Eyes Were Watching God, Janie is forced by her grandmother to marry her first husband. She doesnt truly love him. Her grandmother wants her to be protected. Her first husband, Logan Killicks, is a hard working man, and he can provide for her. While married to Killicks she meets her second husband, Joe Starks. She is very impressed by the way Joe looks and acts.

He is very wealthy, and ambitious. He promises to treat her like a lady and care for her. Janie falls in love with the idea of this, but she doesnt really love Joe. Joe does care for her very well, but he makes her 4 do things she doesnt want to. He forces her to wear her hair up. He doesnt let her speak and he forces her to work in the store.

Then she meets her third husband Tea Cake. He treats her very, very well. He teaches her things and lets her speak out. Even though he has no money or possessions to offer her, except for himself, and his love, she truly falls in love with him and marries him.

Gatsby does everything he can to win back Daisy, even when he knows she is now married. He does everything he can to win her over. He flaunts him riches. When he has her in his room, he throws his silk shirts in the air to flaunt them.

This shows how he will try and do anything to impress Daisy. In actuality his money and possessions mean nothing to him. He doesnt even think twice before throwing the shirts around. It also shows how he would give it all away for Daisy. He would get rid of all his possessions if that would impress Daisy. Because of his search for love he no longer thinks of himself.

He only thinks of what he can do to impress Daisy, and to get his true love. In Their Eyes Were Watching God, Janie is at first very impressed the money and material things. Her first husband owns a 60 -acre farm, which seems great to her at first, until her husband wants her to work on the farm. Money is what draws her to her second husband.

He tells her of his great wealth, and his plan to go run the new city. He becomes mayor of the city, and owns 200 acres. He builds her a huge beautiful house. But she again isnt happy.

This time her husband forces her to hide her beautiful hair. He doesnt want the rest or the men staring at it. He will never let her speak. When he and his friends are outside of the store talking with each other he forbids her to talk with them. And when she does speak, he gets furious. TeaCake however has very little money.

But he treats her very well. He compliments her. He wants her to wear her hair down. He wants others to see it, to see what it his. The only reason he wants her to work is so they can be with each other as often as possible. He loves to interact with her.

He teaches her things. He teaches her how to play checkers, and how to shoot a gun. He treats her with respect. Janie realizes that money and possessions dont really matter. She realizes that she loves TeaCake for the man he truly is, not for what he has. Gatsby makes great sacrifices Daisy.

He lets her drive his car, and she winds up hitting Myrtle Wilson and killing her. Since she was driving his car, and no one knew she was driving, this places the blame directly on Gatsby. That night he stands outside of Daisy's house just watching. Just making sure that she is all right. When Nick questions him of the accident, he even takes the blame for Daisy at first. And when Nick figures out that Daisy was driving Gatsby tells Nick that he will take the blame for her.

Gatsby does all of this in hopes that Daisy will love him as much as he loves her. He is willing to give up his life for her. TeaCake also risks himself, and makes great sacrifices for Janie. When they are fleeing from the hurricane, and Janie gets swept away in the water, he goes after her to save her from the dog in the water. He winds up getting rabies when the dog bites him, while he is saving Janie.

This leads to the greatest sacrifice Janie has ever made. TeaCake is now rabid, and Janie has to shoot him. She has tried all she could to help him. She was willing to spend as much money as needed on doctors to try and help him, but it was too late. She does everything possible to help him. Then she has to kill him.

She has to kill the only man she ever truly loved. And she has to kill him because he sacrificed himself for her. Her life long struggle to find love and happiness has to end in this tragic way. And because of the way that it ended she is more sad and lonely then when she started.

Her struggle to find love has now left her empty and alone. Gatsby's lifelong struggle also ends in failure. Daisy admits that she does love her husband. Which basically crushes Gatsby.

He realizes they will never be able to be together. Gatsby ends up dying because of his sacrifices for Daisy. Myrtle Wilsons husband shoots Gatsby because he believes that Gatsby killed his wife. If Gatsby hadnt let Daisy drive, or if he had confessed to what actually happened he wouldnt have been killed. His lifelong struggle for love ended in his death. He died sad and lonely, for he was never able to have Daisy.

Although love causes these great hardships everyone is willing to struggle for it. In these stories love has led people to very incomplete endings of their lives. Bibliography:
