The Epic of Gilgamesh and the Old Testament share some similarities; there are several differences as well. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, the God Enlil called for a flood because, the world teemed, the people multiplied, the world bellowed like a wild bull, and the great god was aroused. The idea behind the flood was to kill all of humankind, but the God Ea came to Utnapishtim in a dream and told him to build a boat. O man of Shurrupak, son of Ultra-Tutu; tear down your house and build a boat, abandon possessions and look for life, despise worldly good and save your soul alive. So Utnapishtim built a boat that was 6 stories high. With him he brought his family, craftsmen, steersman, and all the animals of the world.

The flood lasted for six days and nights. At the end of the flood the boat lodged on the mountain of Nisir. Utnapishtim sent out a dove to look for land, but the dove came back. Then he sent out a swallow, it also came back. Lastly he sent a raven out it didn t come back. They rejoiced and made a sacrifice to the Gods.

In the Old Testament God decided to flood the earth because of the sin of mankind. God told Noah to build a great ark, for the end of mankind is coming. So Noah built an ark three stories high. He brought with him, his family, and two animals of each type of animal, a male and female. The flood lasted for forty days and nights. At the end of the flood the ark landed on the mountains of Ararat.

He too sent out a raven to find land, but the raven returned. Then he sent out a dove, the dove came back with an olive leaf. He sent out the dove again and this time the dove did not come back. In each of the stories that we have read so far, each one had a different idea of the afterlife.

In the Iliad, Oedipus the King, and Antigone the idea in the afterlife is that you arrive the same way you left the living. So for instance, if a person were to cut his head off, then in the underworld he would walk around with no head. In Gilgamesh the people believed in many Gods. Gilgamesh himself had a lot of respect for the Gods.

They were the type of Gods who would do anything to help the people when necessary, however they were also the type to choose to do something just for their own benefit, such as the flood. In the Old Testament the Hebrews worship only one God. The idea was that God created the world and humankind in the form of himself. He test the strength of his people s belief by making them suffer a number of things to see if they throw their faith away such as in Job. In Oedipus and Antigone there are also many Gods, although the belief in them isn t as strong as in the epic of Gilgamesh. The idea of Oedipus and Antigone is mainly about fate.

Again in the Iliad the people believe in many Gods.
