The Epic of Gilgamesh is a perfect example of a quest story. The hero, Gilgamesh searches for something that all people would like to have, he must pass a series of hurdles to reach his goal, and he receives help from the outside. The Epic of Gilgamesh by N. K.
Standard dates from the third millennium BC, and tells about a kings struggle to find immortality. Gilgamesh is searching for everlasting life, and as he is doing this he is presented with many challenges and is forced to receive help from the outside, in the end he was not successful. One of the main things that make this a quest story is that Gilgamesh is searching for something that everyone wants. For example, he had to go through twelve leagues of darkness to discover the secret to everlasting life, only to find out that he would have to make another difficult journey if he wanted to know the secret. Since he was mourning his best friend? s death he looked very tired and old.
Every god that he went to for help questioned whether he was really Gilgamesh the hero because of how terrible he looked. In addition, Gilgamesh found a plant that would give him immortality, but while he was sleeping Ishtar ate it, and finally got her revenge. Just when he found out the secret to everlasting life it was taken away from him. This made him feel frustrated and discouraged. Gilgamesh had to go through all of these difficult journeys immediately after Enkidu died and it was very tiring for him. In every quest story the hero must overcome many difficult challenges in order to succeed.
For instance, when Enkidu died, Gilgamesh started to fear death and he had no one to turn to for help. Before they would face their problems together and help each other out, but now he had to do it on his own. Especially since everyone in the city looked up to him he has to be strong and brave all of the time. Along with his best friend dying he found a plant underwater that would make him young but it wouldn?
t give him everlasting life. Even though he attempted to find the secret to immortality many times he did not give up. After that many setbacks most people abandon their dream. He stayed strong because everyone believed that he could accomplish his goal. In this story Gilgamesh receives help from the outside world. One example was Shamash, the sun god, who guided him across the ocean.
Gilgamesh would have been completely lost if it wasn? t for the help of the gods. They always pointed him in the right direction, but many obstacles kept getting in his way. Equally important in his search for immortality was the Man-scorpion. He opened the gate of the mountain and let Gilgamesh pass through. If the Man-scorpion didn?
t help him Gilgamesh would of never even got close to discovering the secret to immortality. Many other gods helped him in his journey as well. Even with all of the help and support of most of the people in the city, Gilgamesh never discovered the secret to immortality. There were to many hurdles for just one man to overcome. In the end Gilgamesh died, but he left a great legend behind.
