What s eating Gilbert Grape Gilbert Grape is from a small town in the U. S. A. Gilbert s town is suffering from a depression, on top of that he is having his own personal problems with family and friends which will be stated in my essay. Gilberts first problem is his little brother Arnie. Arnie is mentally disabled and about to turn 18 years old.
Some days Gilbert and Arnie are best friends and some days Gilbert wishes Arnie was dead. The main problem with Arnie is that he needs to be looked after all the time, which makes Gilbert a permanent babysitter. Arnie can be very hard to take care of if he is not watched. Arnie usually tries to climb up the water tower, which causes the police to come and get him, this caused Arnie to be arrested.
Arnie Also bursts out with comments, One day they were eating dinner and the father came up and Arnie Started Screaming and laughing Dad s dead, Which caused their mother too cry. Another obvious problem with Arnie is that he doesn t understand what s going on because he is handicapped and cannot adapt to what s happening around him. Gilberts second problem is his mother. Gilberts mother is a very obese lady and she can t help it. This frustrates Gilbert because he does not like to see his mother talked about. Gilbert also feels very bad when the whole town stops to stare at her.
Gilbert shows that sometimes he doesn t even care and Gilbert himself calls her a fat whale. Gilbert loves his mother very much and he shows it once or twice. When Gilberts mother dies he decides that she is not going to be a show. Gilbert and his family decide to burn down the house with their mother still in her bed so that there wouldn t be a circus act for a funeral. Gilbert loved his mother very much and showed this in the film. Their mother died at just the right time because Gilbert couldn t stand this life anymore.
Gilbert s third problem is the married women which is trying to cheat on her husband with Gilbert. Gilbert already has enough complications in his life and this woman just tops them off. Gilbert fools around with this women a bit which makes it weird when her husband died because it looks like a murder. Gilbert was very worried about her husband, he was scared that he had found out about Gilbert and his wife, this is why Gilbert was very afraid to go to his office and see him. The married woman adds unnecessary complication to Gilberts life which he shouldn t have to deal with. In conclusion I would like to state that Gilberts life has been like a roller coaster ride which is not even half way through.
Gilbert needs to forget the past and move on with his life. At the end of the film we don t really know where Gilbert and Arnie are going, we just know that Gilbert is doing what he needs to by leaving their small little town of problems.
