Filling a space in a beautiful way. That is what art means to me (Georgia OKeeffe). Born in 1887 on a farm in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, Georgia OKeeffe became an important American artist as early as the age of 17. After high school she studied for one year at the Chicago Art Institute under John Vanderpoel. She continued her studies in New York City at the Art Students League with William Merritt Chase. Also in New York she attended Columbia Teachers College.

There she studied with Arthur Dow, who encouraged her to pursue her own style of abstract art. While there, a famous photographer Alfred Stieglitz was shown her work. He was so impressed that he displayed some of her work in one of his exhibits without her permission. He was so happy to show a womens work for a change. Georgia OKeeffe became angry and demanded her drawings to be removed.

But she could not resist the support and friendship of Alfred Stieglitz. They married in 1924 when Georgia OKeeffe was 37 years old. Georgia OKeeffe became an artist during a time when women were not taken seriously. But by becoming friends with Stieglitz, she was able to join in with other artists and be easily accepted. Georgia OKeeffe painted familiar things of nature that were around her, such as flowers. In 1929 when she visited a friend in Mexico her life and art changed.

She painted objects found in the desert such as: a sun bleached animal skull and dessert sky. She used the colors of the Southwest in her paintings-tans, grays, reddish browns and whites. In 1946 after her husband died, she made New Mexico her permanent residence. Her paintings of nature and the advancing womens movement in the 1970 s and her unique appearance made Georgia OKeeffe very popular. She continued to paint until old age would not allow it. She had to give up painting at 80 years old, but went on to live to the age of 98, dying March 1986.

Georgia Okeeffe's work was so great because she painted things in an abstract way, but they were still familiar to the viewer. She used vivid, bold colors and shapes of nature. She would change the scale of an object so much that it would fill up a whole canvas. She was also interested in painting negative space, such as the hole in a pelvis bone or the space between clouds. I like Georgia Okeeffe's paintings because of the beautiful colors and oversized objects. When I look at one of her flower paintings, such as Red Poppy, I could stare at it for a long time and find so much detail.

Georgia OKeeffe made a simple object that I normally take for granted and turned it into something really important and beautiful.
