... f literary work: Adventure / Drama The main point that Alexandre Dumas is presenting in this novel deals with judgement. Those who are good to others will be rewarded in the future. Those who are sinfull will be punished. The action in this novel takes place in Marseilles, Paris, France in the 1800 's. The era of the novel is set during the Napoleonic era.

The cities in which this novel takes place in are, Marseilles, Paris, and Rome. Most of the scenes are in the cities but others take place on the countryside, and Edmond Dantes was a young and handsome sailor. He had a lot of things that people would dream of. The two main people that were jealous of him were a man named Fernand Mondego and a man named Monsieur Danglars. Fernand was in love with Dantes' fiance Mercedes, while Danglars was jealous that Dantes was to receive the rank of Captain that he didn't have. These men (as well as two others named Gaspard Caderousse and Monsieur de Villefort) form a conspiracy and arrange for Dantes to be arrested and sent to a dreadful prison named the Chateau d'If.

After a couple years in the Chateau d'If he met Abbe Faria who became Dantes' intern father. Dantes met Abbe Faria through a secret passage way they both had built. Faria taught Dantes many things in there years together in prison. One of which was the secretly kept treasure of the Spada family.

The two friends had planned an escape, but Faria dies before they can carry out there escape. Dantes once again becomes filled with grief and sadness, but he thinks up a plan. He thought only the dead leave the Chateau d'If, decides to replace Faria's corpse with himself. He places Faria in his own cell in bed facing the wall. He sews the shroud back once he is inside it.

He is then thrown into the sea as all the corpses were of the Chateau d'If are. That is how Dantes made his great escape. Dantes is picked up by a ship of smugglers. He joins them untill he reaches the Isle of Monte Cristo where the great Spada family treasure was kept. With his new found wealth he returns to society as the Count of Monte Cristo.

During Dantes' imprisonment, Mercedes ends up marrying Fernand and Dantes' father had died starving himself. The Morrel firm (Which Dantes had worked for) almost had gone out of business. All of Dantes' enemies: Danglars, Fernand, and Villefort have now become wealthy and Monte Cristo had two goals at this point. First was to reward all the people who had not turned against him. Second was to punish all the people who ruined his great life and who cost him his fiance, his father, and best years of his life. Monte Cristo rewards Monsieur Morrel by saving his honor and his company from bankruptcy.

He saves him by sending a letter addressed from Sinbad the Sailor (Monte Cristo) to his daughter Julie to go to a room and get a red purse there. In the purse they discover a large amount of money and a walnut sized diamond that ends up saving the company. As for Monte Cristo's enemies, he punishes them extremly bad. Monte Cristo punishes Caderousse in a very clever way. Caderousse's eyes were covered with greed for him to see clearly. One night he try's to rob Monte Cristo's house when the Abbe Busoni stopped him.

Caderousse left after begging for his life, but only to killed by his own partner in Fernand married Mercedes in the long run and was punished by Monte Cristo. Monte Cristo releases news in the newspaper about how Fernand (Count de Morcerf) betrayed the Ali Pasha and sold him into slavery. At his trail Haydee is able to testify against him and convict him. Monte Cristo then debtors Fernand's relationship with his family. When Mercedes and Albert flee, he takes his Danglars was punished by losing all his personal finance. Monte Cristo gets involved in Danglars' finances until Danglars becomes bankrupt.

Danglars was still able to get away with five million francs in bank notes. However, Monte Cristo is able to have an old friend, Luigi Vampa and the rest of his bandits capture him and slowly diminish him of all his five million frances. He is Villefort ended up becoming a madman. His wife was a murderer, she began poisoning her own family. She had attempted to kill Valentine, Maximillien Morrel's love, but Monte Cristo saved her and fooled everyone into thinking she passed away by giving her a powerful drug. When had noticed his wife's evil ways, he told her to poison herself by the time he return back from court.

She then dies at his feet, and find his son dead in the next room. Villefort went mad, and thus Monte Maximillien Morrel was in a depressed state due to the death of his love, Valentine. At the end of the novel Maximillien wants to take his own life with the help of Monte Cristo. Monte Cristo help and gives him something, but it doesn't kill him it knocks him out for some time. During his wake Maximillien awakes to see his love, Valentine. The same day Haydee confessed her love to Monte Cristo and he to felt the same inside.

The next day Maximillien with Valentine hand in hand were walking the shore to see Jacopo. Jacopo hands them a letter form Monte Cristo reading that a boat would take them to Leghorn were Valentine grandfather Noirtier will be waiting for them. As for Monte Cristo and Haydee, they were seen at the horizon sailing away. The main characters in the novel were Edmond Dantes (Count of Monte, Lord Willmore, Sinbad the Sailor, Abbe Busoni), Monsieur Morrel, Maximillien Morrel, Valentine, Abbe Faria Monsieur (Baron) Danglars, Monsieur de Villefort, Gaspard Caderousse, Monsieur Dantes, Haydee, Bertuccio, Luigi Vampa, Madame de Villefort, Mercedes Herrera (Countless de Morcerf), Albert de Morcerf, Julie Morrel, Jacopo, Peppino, Fernand Mondego (Count de Morcerf), Monsieur Noirtier, Cesare Spada, Edward de Villefort, Bennett (Andrea Cavalcanti), and Ali. The character I liked the most was Edmond Dantes. I liked his strenght and his heart that were so strong to get him through his struggles.

He was able to escape from the unescapable Chateau dI'f. He punished the wrong and rewarded the good, and I like how he attacked his enemies from afar and revealed himself to them at the end. He was a man of courage, mercy, and justice. The character I disliked the most was Monsieur de Villefort, because he was really the main enemy of Dantes in the long run, and the one to suffer the most. I really disliked him for what he did to Benedetto, Dantes, and Bertuccio.

He was the most vile character of them all. Over all, I really enjoyed this book. The one problem I had were the long names and the there there difficulty to pronounce, which seemed like a challenge within the book. I would recomend this to a friend, and he would call me crazy but he would be missing out on a great book. As for reading it again, maybe when I'am older. Maybe.
