In Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, Clarisse McClellan is a character who has not been influenced by the society in which she lives. This, combined with her family s teachings enables her to be wise beyond her years. Because she possesses these special characteristics, she becomes a muse, inspiring Montag to change his most basic beliefs about right and wrong. Clarisse was brought up in a family where she was allowed to think, thus giving her the ability to not be affected by the society s programming. At night her family sits and talks, while most people are watching their parlor walls. Her family teaches her things about the way the world used to be, and the way that it should be now.

Because she knows these things, she questions teachers while in school, not wanting to participate in the normal activities. Clarisse is deemed anti-social by the school because her definition of social is talking to [people] about things like how strange the world is, and not letting them run the answers at you, bing, bing, bing. Society has a different opinion though, it thinks that students should not talk to one another, but use television as the teacher. The students are not allowed to ask questions, they just accept what is fed to them by the teacher on the screen. Clarisse is different; she likes to question, and does not just accept what people tell her.

But you know, we never ask questions, she says to Montag, complaining about school. This is one of the qualities that Montag loves about her. She eventually affects him enough that he starts to question and not accept all the answers that he has been given by society. Her ability to question gives her knowledge beyond her years. Montag is constantly telling her that she sound[s] so very old. She is afraid of children her own age because they like to beat one another up, and unlike these kids, she is responsible.

Sometimes I m ancient, Clarisse explains. I am afraid of children my own age. They kill each other. While most children are driving on the freeway trying to hit small animals, Clarisse does all the shopping and cleaning for her household. She knows what it means to take responsibility for her actions, and this gives her the ability to determine what is right and wrong, unlike most people in her community. Montag recognizes that this is a unique quality and is forced to look within himself to evaluate what right and wrong really are.

As Montag recognizes that Clarisse is not the average citizen, he starts questioning society and his place in it. He compares her to a clock, all knowing what it had to tell of the night passing swiftly on toward further darkness, but moving also toward a new sun. She is this clock to Montag. He is in a period of darkness in his life, and now that she has entered it, he is forced to look at where he stands, and move forward toward understanding and light. When they first meet, she asks him questions about the nature of being a fireman, and if this really makes him happy. Are you happy, she asks.

Of course I m happy, he tells himself. This frustrates Montag, and he goes home and contemplates all these questions. After thinking it over, he realizes that he is not happy, and Clarisse has forced him to recognize it. This is the point of no return for Montag.

She has taken his mask off and run across the lawn with [it] and there was no way of going to knock on her door and ask for it back. After he realizes this, his change beings to happen. This change starts to come about slowly at first, but Clarisse sees it the whole time. She knows he is not like the other firemen. At one point she says to him, When I said something about the moon, you looked at the moon, last night. Most people don t take time to notice the things she talks about.

Later, while they are walking together she explains how fun it is to taste the rain, and he laughs at this, but after she is gone he tilt[s] his head back in the rainband open[s] his mouth. She tells him that he does not seem like a normal fireman, and after this he feels his body divide itself into a hotness and a coldness, a softness and a hardness, the two halves grinding one upon the other. He knows that she has affected him now, and while at work, he asks his boss if firemen always set fires, letting the questions Clarisse asked him to come out of his mouth. He knows this is not normal behavior and after this, he starts questioning things, and determining the answers for himself, not letting the society tell him what to believe. It is because of this questioning and Clarisse s influence that he takes the next step and starts actually reading books. Clarisse comes into Montag s life unexpectedly.

She starts to question him, and make him think. He sees in her a knowledge that he himself does not posses, but wants to. She acts as an all-knowing muse, inspiring him to change his beliefs by showing him who he really is.
