African Art does not have specific date to which it evolved because most early African Art was carved in wood, which perished quickly. This is why most art dates from the 19 th and early 20 th century. Many 20 th century artists admired and collected pieces of African Art. They enjoyed the bold color, expression, and form that produced a new beginning in art history. African Art was mostly dedicated to life affirming activities such as healing, pleasure, protection, and transformation. The first African Art that made a sustained impact on Europe occurred with the bronze casing and ivory seized in 1897 by the British Royal Army.

It was then that African Art began to become in demand, and seen by all areas of the world. Recently, archaeological explorations have become the main contributors of African Art history. African Art is continuously evolving although the rate of change has varied from time to time and place to place. A specific word for art did not exist in languages of most traditional African people.

Instead, they used a word to describe the making of the object. African Art as been tied to political and religious aspects. Some secular objects existed, but most are prestige, or objects that functions in communing with a supernatural power. There are many different forms of African Art, but the main forms include Masks show a wide range of design and subject matter.

They are mostly based on naturalistic human forms or interpretations. Some are placed on the top of the head, while others rest on the shoulders. Many masks are decorated with beads, wigs, human hair, and earrings. Some cultures paint faces instead of wearing masks.

Some mask types include ancestral, sacrificial, avenging, protection, peace-making, and ritual. These masks are worn in ritual in which the wearer could empower the spirit. Western masks were made to conceal an individuals identity. African masks were to establish a different identity for the wearer in order to amuse, teach, or sacrifice. A great example of an African mask is Bayaka Mask. This mask is used for a form of rite.

When a boy reaches puberty he is circumcised. After this is done, the boy is removed from the village for one year of seclusion from women. During this time, the boy is taught to hunt and protect by fellow men from the village. To end the one year confinement, a ceremony is held when the boy and his teachers return in the Bayaka Masks. Sculptures are another form of African Art that is very important to its history. Sculptures came in a variety of shapes and sizes.

They were often made of wood, metal, cloth, or clay. These sculptures served as personal protection figures, symbols for supernatural powers, and representation of ancestors. Most sculptures were made to represent the human body, but some cultures never carve human faces so it resembled any individual in fear of accusations of witch craft. A great example of one such sculpture is Can and Zaire. This sculpture is of a women breast feeding her child. The face of the two people is elongated, as well as the breasts of the mother.

This is common to all African Art because they wanted representation of what is being expressed. In this particular sculpture, a supernatural power is being called upon. The power has been asked to protect the mother and child, and to let them have a fruitful life. The sculpture is decorated with tattoo markings and emblems enabling each ancestor to recognize the people to be watch over. Masks and sculptures are not the only important symbolizes African Art. The tribes of the land were also a main reason for the arts The Yoruba Tribe is a very imperative part of African Art history.

The tribe was located in Southwestern Africa and their artists were very talented. The Yoruba Tribe has been characterized as the ones who organized the true history of this beautiful art. There are numerous themes of Yoruba Art which includes honoring gods and ancestors, sculptures, architecture, statues, and recent paintings. Among these themes, the Yoruba Palace Doors were created. These doors are part of the architecture that dominated the tribes palace surroundings. The entrances to these palaces were set with large, carved double doors.

They often depicted local life and diversity. On Yoruba Palace Doors, a man with his horse is shown to represent the power of man over animal. Lastly, present day African Art has begun to make its mark over the last 100 years. Because painting rarely existed in past African Art, it is now that painting has become more popular. Present day painters often use subjects such as religion, politics, symbols, and human body.

These subjects express a variety of the painters ideas, goals, and imagination. Today little professional training is given to artists. There are no galleries or museums to see pieces of an artist work. Most of these people have to sell their work in hotel shops or markets to tourists.

This forces many of the painters to The new African painting and sculpture has been inspired by the desire of Africans to become part of the modern world. This new, present day art has become more interesting than all of the work from the past. The new artists today take modern ideas and based them from older generations. Although subject matter in painting and sculpture is largely the same as that found in earlier works, there are two important exceptions.

One is the representation of the social events that are taking place in the new Africa. Just as times have changed, so has the social aspect of the country. Secondly, artists are beginning to deal more with fantasy and dream like subjects. This allows for a wide variety of subjects and imagination.

Because of all the unique aspects of African Art, more and more people are now becoming fascinated with Africa and its history. Soon it will be seen in the homes of many individuals for decoration, and its brilliance will continue to grow. Africa is a mysterious place and the art of this country is one that will survive the test of time, and the beauty of its art will be seen for years to come. Bibliography:
