Epicurus was a philosopher who was believed to be the one with all the answers to life. He encouraged the Ideal of Good Life, to live simple lives by seeking pleasure and avoiding pain. Epicurus views worries as unnecessary and unnatural desires. If these desires are avoided, he believes that all worries will be eliminated. Epicurus metaphysical theory was based on Democrituss view of atoms. They were monists who believed all is matter, the soul is equivalent to the mind and comes apart at death.

I feel that Epicurus extravagance leads to pain, not pleasure; and, therefore, should be avoided. According to Epicurus, the purpose of life is happiness; and by happiness he means not that state of well being and perfection, but pleasure itself. The Epicurean goal to happiness was ataraxia, freedom from inner disturbance. Epicurus acknowledges the issue of pain caused by owning many material possessions. He believes that even though these possessions may make us happy, the long-term pleasure will not exist. Having many great possessions cause people to be happy, but then they want more and more, which means they will never reach happiness.

I feel this point is true to some extent. Although quality of life is a very important point made by Epicurus, quantity also plays a big role. Epicurus takes this to the extreme level of never giving ones self any luxury at all. Everyone who lives on the earth has their good and bad days, when it is a bad day, as human beings we deserve to splurge every once in a while. We work hard here as humans and deserve some kind of replenishment for it, weather it is material, physical, emotional, or whatever else it is that one wants. Epicurus believes pleasure is the standard of morality.

This means that any act that may cause pain is completely an immoral act. I strongly disagree with this belief because it is selfish. If an old lady fell while crossing the street, it is only moral, as a bystander, to help her get to safety. This may cause long-lasting pain for the bystander because a car could hit him / her . We usually think of charity, compassion, humility, wisdom, honor, justice, and other virtues as morally good and pleasure as, at best, morally neutral, but for Epicurus, behavior in pursuit of pleasure assured an upright life. If everyone believed in Epicureanism, there would be no such thing as police, firemen, or EMS.

Everyone would be worrying about himself or herself and would die. Another immoral pleasure according to Epicurus would be if the amount of pain outweighs the amount of pleasure. An example of this would be sexual intercourse (short-term pleasure) which could lead to pregnancy (long-term pain). Epicurus believed that the bad thoughts of death were said to be immoral because it causes pain (anxiety) rather than pleasure. The number one aspect of life Epicurus and his followers strive to avoid is, pain. Epicureans believe that if one avoids all pain, he is wise and will live worry free.

He talks about the issue of death and how people feel anxiety when the thought crosses their minds. Epicurus believes that death is an empty belief, which is empty pain, and proves the outlook on death to be unrealistic. Before birth we were non-existent, Epicurus tells us to think of how much pain we felt during Pearl Harbor, since we werent born yet, we didnt feel any pain. When we die, Epicurus argues, we will be non-existent therefore, since we there wasnt any pain before birth we wont feel pain after death. When you die there is no sensation because there is no body, which means there is no pain, and because pain is not present; we should not fear death. I am a catholic and believe in eternity.

I disagree with Epicurus because I feel the eternal soul, would either go to purgatory, hell, limbo and eventually heaven. An aspect that contains a combination of each topic explained above is selfishness. A person who views their life solely on happiness, pain, pleasure, and tranquillity is one who does not care about another persons happiness and pain. If a friend grows sick, an Epicurean would just scratch that person out of their life like the drop of a coin because to help them would require the risk of pain and waste of time.

The only reason an Epicurean would have any friends would be to utilize them and use them for their opinions. However, friendship for the sake of advantage is not true friendship in the proper sense of the word. Since virtue is the highest pleasure that could be obtained, he who practices virtue for the sake of pleasure alone is selfish, not virtuous. Because he lacks virtue, he will never enjoy pleasure.

Desire Management, a way to correctly avoid pain, was a very large part of Epicurean beliefs. Epicurus felt that the elimination of all worries could take place if we only satisfy our natural and necessary desires. There are three different combinations of desires that Epicurus discusses: Natural and Necessary, Natural and Unnecessary, and Unnatural. First, natural and necessary desires are desires in which the beliefs behind the desires are both true. For example, if a person felt the urge to use the bathroom, they know if they dont go it will cause pain, therefore it is necessary to relieve himself or herself. Second, natural and unnecessary desires limit a person to a minimum.

It is natural to feel the desire for food, but unnecessary to gorge or treat ones self to a steak dinner; bread and water will prevent the hunger pains, so that is what we should have. Thirdly, unnecessary desires are vain and will not cause pain if absent. According to Epicurus, it is unnecessary to desire sex. I strongly disagree with this point because it is natural to have the urge for sexual interactions and necessary to fulfill them or else reproduction would not occur.

It seems to me that Epicurus was the type of person who just wanted to live the life he was supposed to live so he could live life in the best possible way. Even though his beliefs were mostly unrealistic, his intent was to make it possible to live worry free. I feel that if Epicurus lived in todays society, he would have a completely different philosophy. Epicurus did not have enough information to back up all of his theories, and with our world today, he would have thought differently about his philosophy, ideal of the Good Life. 317
