Edgar Allen Poe Edgar Allen Poe was born January 19, 1809 and died October 7, 1849. Poe was born in Boston Massachusetts, his Father deserted the family and his mother died before Poe was three years old. John Allen, a tobacco exporter from Richmond, Va. And his wife Frances raised Poe as a foster kid, but never legally adopted him. In 1826, Poe attended the University of Virginia, where he was a excellent student. But because his foster father sent him barely enough money for books and clothing Poe turned to gambling to try to make more money.
His debts soon caused Poe to withdraw from the University. In 1826 Poe went to Boston and enlisted in the army, by the time he was discharged he had achieved the rank of sergeant major. Poe then moved to Baltimore to live with his aunt, Mrs. Maria Clear, and her daughter Virginia. Poe soon married his 13 year old cousin Virginia. Only to find out in 1842 that she had contracted tuberculosis, in 1847 she died of the disease.
Poe soon took to drinking to try to ease his despair. Poe s drinking and gossip of his drinking sometimes made it hard for him to even get a job, or maintain one. In 1849, Poe became engaged to marry the widowed Mrs. Sarah Royster Shelton, his boyhood sweetheart, this was sometime around September. All that is known from that point on is that Poe was found lying out side a voting place on October 3. He died in a hospital four days later, without regaining consciousness.
His cause of death is still remains unknown, although it is rumored that he could have possibly had contracted rabies from one of his cats Poe s best known work includes The Fall of the House of Usher, The Murder s in the Rue Morgue, The Tell-Tale Heart, and The Pit and The Pendulum. Two of his best poems were The Raven (1845), and Annabel Lee (1849). The Raven the narrator is overwhelmed by melancholy and omens of death. The Bells (1849), a poem that seems to echo with the chiming of metallic instruments. The Sleeper (1831), which reproduces the state of drowsiness. Lenore (1831) and Annabel Lee (1849) are verse lamentations on the death of a beautiful young woman.
