Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19 in Boston Massachusetts. in 1809 (Dameron, par. 1). His parents David and Elizabeth Arnold Poe both were involved in the theater. David Poe was a actor in Baltimore, and Elizabeth just the same. They were not especially talented actors, the played minor roles in insignificant theater. There love for the theater barley made them a living.

David mysteriously disappeared in 1810. His mother Elizabeth Arnold later died of Tuberculosis in December of 1811, Edgar was 2 years old. Mrs. Frances Allan had herd of the abandoned child and sense she had no children of her own wanted to adopt Edgar. She had been abandoned herself and her heart went out to him.

She had not received a good education, she made many spelling errors. She was well organized, and a good house wife (Qrisse, par. 4). Mrs. Allan's husband did not want to adopt Edgar because he would be able to inherit the name and fortune of the family. He was willing to support the child. It took time but Mr.

Allan eventually did become proud of Edgar's good looks and inelegance. Edgar's sister Rosalie was taken in to the MacKenzie family who were good friends of the Allan's. Edgar may have meet Rosalie, but now one is really sure. The Allan's and the Mackenzie's enjoyed going to the theater together. At 6 years old Mrs. Allan's business took them to Scotland, where Mr.

Allan had been born. They stayed for five years, here Edgar would attend Irvine Grammar School in Irvine, Scotland. The school was a large white mansion, the inside was a large number of corridors and a number of stair cases to mach. This made the trip from one room to another a definite maze. This school was thought to have been used in many of his stories.

Edgar felt rather neglected by his family, and the fact tat Mrs. Allan was constantly ill did not help much. She would just recover from being ill last for a few days maybe a week and then she would be sick once more. Mr Allan blamed it on her imagination. When Edgar was 11 they returned to Richmond.

This had its ups and downs, the town was remote enough to go play in the woods or the fields but still a busy town. Unfortunately it did have a few draw backs. The town held strongly to its aristocratic traditions, where you were from is more important than where you may go. Edgar was put through a English classical school attended by the well to do families of Richmond.

This made the difference between the other boys and Edgar, they had families and Edgar had a family at one point in time. Mr. Allan's refusal to adopt him had defiantly left there mark on young Edgar. He used this as a reason to act even more arrogant than the rest.

This feeling of uselessness led to fits of rage and rebellion normally with no real cause. His foster father took his actions as a lack of gratitude for what was given to him. Even though they had lost there family feeling, Mr Allan sent Edgar to collage. He was more than willing to go, jumping at the chance to get away from the Allan family.

This was the worst decision that Mr. Allan could have made. Edgar spent most of his time getting drunk and or fighting off a hangover, gambling his money away, and generally trying to pick a fight just for the thrill of fighting. His debts for gambling amounted to $ 2000 - 2500 This strongly compounded his highly emotional temper, the alcohol it self sent him into rage.

Edgar was enrolled into the University Of Virginia where he studied language. He was one of the young ones in the university, most of the students were 19 and up, he had only been 17 for a month. He was proud of the school he went to, it was relatively new and small, only 177 students. During his schooling he was described as moody and hard to get along with, it is thought that it was due to his romantic infatuation with Elmira Royster. He went to a party that was thrown for Elmira, this party destroyed his hopes of love sense it was an engagement party. (Qrisse, par. 11 - 21). Edgar wrote many letters whose content was border line hostile, and all the sudden when he wanted some money or more of his things sent he would make it to obvious by having a light tongue.

At one point Mr. Allan caught on to his trick, one of his sugar coated letters came back to him in the mail, on the back of the envelope it said pretty letter. Edgar's foster father often commented against having him in the first place. He wrote this line to Mr. Allan I have herd you say (when you little thought I was listening and therefore must have said it in earnest) that you had no affection for me (Qrisse, par. 14) The university was rather violent, many students were struck on the head with a stone and pulled a pistol on the attacker (which amazingly enough was common). One student bit into Edgar's arm.

Masked students would throw stones at the professors, seven students were expelled for high stakes gambling, and the list goes on. Once Mr. Allan had herd of this he took Edgar out of school and threw him into a no brainer job at his counting house. This enraged Edgar who saw it as an insult to his intelligence. He left home and went to Boston and attempt to make it as a writer.

He did eventually have a few poems to be published in a pamphlet form. The writing did not put enough money into his pocket to pay the bills. His answer to this problem was the army, he joined the army under the name Edgar A. Perry to hide his aristocratic background. Poe did attempt to patch things up with Mr. Allan, and had some success, he got Mr.

Allan to pay his way out of the army. Unfortunately not but a year later he tried the army life once again. He passed the entrance exams for West Point, New York. Poe believed that there were two views of the military. One was that it was a suitable career for a Virginia gentleman. The second was that the discipline was not the most congeal.

He decided not to stick it out and cut class and miss drills trying to get him thrown out. This worked rather well and in no time the army gave him the boot. During this time the London tobacco market collapsed and Mr. Allan was having trouble making ends meet. He attempted to sell the business but could not find a buyer.

They lost there house in London and moved back to New York. The first order of business was to find a Doctor for Mrs. Allan, she had become very ill and latter died of tuberculosis (Qrisse, pars. 10 - 11) This was not one of Edgar's brightest moves ever. This really made Mr. Allan angry, he had just lost Mrs.

Allan, which had been Edgar's only friend in the house. Mr. Allan had no intentions of dealing with Edgar any longer. After there final argument Edgar went to live with his Aunt Maria Clemm in Baltimore. She was a poor seamstress that did not have much to give but was happy to give it.

Edgar was thankful for what she had to give and lived with her for a while. During this time Edgar had learned of a literary contest in 1833, the prizes were 25 dollars and the short story was 50 dollars. Edgar decided to enter the contest and would have won in both categories, but the committee decided to award the prizes to two separate individuals, so the prize for just the short story went to Edgar. The prize was meager but one of the prize judges took an interest in him and helped him to sell his writings to the Southern Literary Messenger of Richmond. He was hired by the paper as an soon became the editor, and many of his stories were published in the paper. This earned him enough to bring Mrs.

Clemm and her daughter to Virginia. Clemm's daughter Virginia latter married Edgar Once again Edgar's drinking and rowdiness had gotten him into trouble once again. He was dismissed from his position as an editor and then hired once again, and dismissed once more. This moved the three back to New York. Mrs. Clemm set up a boarding house to support them.

This allowed Edgar to look for work. The 1837 financial panic destroyed many of Edgar's options when many of the magazines closed down. He couldnt find a job but did manage to publish a long story, it was so detailed that the general public thought that it was a true story. Two years latter he moved to Philadelphia to be an editor for the Burton's Gentleman's magazine. He began once again to publish his stories in the magazine, these stories began to stretch into the field of the supernatural and horror. Within the same year that Edgar took the job as an editor of the magazine, the magazine company was sold out and they kept Edgar on as the editor.

The name of the magazine under the new name would be Grahams Magazine. Under this new name and management it would become one of the most important American magazine of its time. It was in this magazine that he had began to publish detective stories. One of his detective stories gained him a lot of recognition in France, The Murders In Rue Morgue. This was one of the first stories of logical deduction. In 1844 Edgar moved back to New York where he wrote The Raven, this was probably the poem that he was most known for.

This was not his best work but this was the one that Edgar was the most proud of. He would read this poem to groups of people with the lamps down low and found the eerie tone to match. This shot him into the peek of his career. Many of the lines in the Raven gave a bleak look to life; Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December, and each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.

Eagerly I wished the morrow; -vainly had sought to barrow From my books surcease of sorrow- sorrow for the lost Lenore- for the rare and radiant maiden whom the angles name Lenore-nameless here for evermore (Poe. par, 2). The feeling of loss and agony is some what disturbing, the entire poem shows the loss and the feeling of nothingness; And the Raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting on the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door; And his eyes have all the seeming of a demons that is dreaming, And the lamplight oer him streaming throws his shadow on the floor And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor shall be lifted nevermore (Poe, par. 18) From just the two stanzas you can see the feeling of depression and self inflicted misery. Lucky for Edgar the two women in his life stood behind him without fail.

Virginia and her mother were always there for him. Virginia was always kind and loving, and her mother was the mother he never had. He was very loving towards Virginia, she was slowly dying of tuberculosis. He also treated Mrs. Clemm like a Queen. There award family moved to Fordham, and from there to a village not far from New York.

Mrs. Clemm set up the nicest room in the house as a study for Edgar. They made it through the summer, but as fall came they could not afford to keep the house warm. In the middle of winter Virginia died, Edgar sank even deeper into depression.

After this Edgar went on to finish Eureka, this book was to show the truth about life, it had a mixture of scientific truth and more garbage than anything else. The death of his wife sent him into a state of deep depression, mixed with alcohol and violence. He began to wander from town to town, and when he made it to Baltimore, he himself died. He was found outside of a tavern in Baltimore, clearly drunk. When he was sent to the hospital he slipped into a coma, two days later he came to and spoke to visitors and acted like he had a bad night. Soon after, his condition deteriorated and no one knew why.

Doctors fought with him to keep him down, it went as far as having to tie him down. His heart was erratic and he struggled with the restraints violently, and could not swallow water. He died three days after he was admitted to the hospital (Reuben, par. 1 - 4). The diagnosis was blood poisoning due to alcoholism, and insanity. Now we are looking back on this as a case of rabies.

A patient infected with rabies suffers from confusion and variations in pulse rate. Also just before a patient goes into there violent death, they have a moment of normality before there quick decent to death. There eye sight fades and a feeling of entrapment overtakes them. Edgar was a cat lover and it is thought that one of his cats bit him that was infected with rabies. Some doctors that have researched this case say that it fit the explanation of rabies, but we would never know for sure. Poe's life was rather depressing but it was hardly depressing enough to spend most of your life in a drunken haze, and the other half in a state of absolute rage.

His style of writing showed his lack of trust in the world, it showed what dreams can hold. One of his most disturbing piece that I have read was The Tell Tale Heart. The idea that someone could actually kill someone that had done so much for him was bad enough, but not only did he kill him he cut him up into many pieces and tucked him away in the floor boards of his room. The only part that had any morals in the story was where the killer felt paranoid enough to hear the beating of his heart. Even then it took the cops to actually make him admit to killing the man.

I think the story was written for his foster father, a man that gave him so much, yet treated him like dirt. Although the killing and chopping to pieces is probably something he only wanted to do. Poe had many things to be proud of in his life, he was considered the pioneer of the short story, the logical deduction detective story, and the horror story. Each type of story he either created or fine tuned and all of them have become popular forms of writing. Each had a particular way of grabbing the attention of the reader and not letting go. If he had more money, a therapist would have been a good choice, but maybe if he had a therapist he would not have wrote the disturbing and highly detailed work that he did.

Maybe it was an act that he put on for the crowd, and if so what would be the point. The best thing about life is that its yours to do with as you please. Edgar decided to shock the world with his dark and dreary look on life in general. This showed some that life wasnt half bad, and that their life could be worse.

Some people just need to hear something that shocks them just enough to show them they dont have as many problems as they could have.
