One Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest In One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest, Randall Patrick Mc Murphy is a hero. When RP Mc Murphy joined Big Nurses ward, the other patients there could not even be termed human. Half of them were physically and psychologically vegetables, and those were the lucky ones. The Acetous could not speak up for their beliefs as Mc Murphy did; their feelings had been suppressed. They could not match his confident swagger; they had been stripped even of their dignity. Mc Murphy found a collection of people emasculated and lost.

Given this sorry crew, Mc Murphy was also given the chance to shine in true heroic fashion. He organized them, gave them a sense of community. With his influence, they stopped turning on each other to please the Big Nurse. They were at home with him and with each other. He gave them an ideal to work towards. Mc Murphy was strong and brash.

He ignored the authority of the Big Nurse. He was a symbol of masculinity and freedom. He felt things, important things, and he said what he felt. In short, he was everything that the patients wished they could be, everything the Big Nurse had taken from all of them rolled into one drinking, swearing Scotsman with scarred hands and outrageous underwear.

He was larger than life. Most importantly, he was an example. A hero is an icon, and thus must be in the public view. Randall Patrick Mc Murphy certainly was that. It was this attitude that Mc Murphy had that had made the other patients feel human again. At one point in the book, he told the other patients of the ward that they were not any more insane than the average person in the outside world.

Not only did this make the other patients look at themselves in a different way, but I think this is also a point were he started to become emotionally attached to these people. I believe he finally began to feel a sense of unity, which is something he probably had not been accustomed to in his earlier life McMurphy was willing to stand behind his beliefs, no matter what the consequences. In this novel, he suffered various consequences, from a bloody hand from punching glass, to electroshock therapy, to a frontal lobotomy that effectively caused his death. Through all of this punishment, he grinned and guffawed and continued exactly as he had and would, showing the men that the Big Nurse only had the power that they gave her. Men who shuffled and stuttered walked tall and spoke clearly.

Men who bowed and fawned and cried stood up for themselves with pride. Chief Broom, who had wasted away to a fraction of his former self, received from Mc Murphy confidence and strength enough to eventually escape the asylum and free himself from the Nurse. Mc Murphy gave him the ability to be a hero on his own terms perhaps the greatest indicator of heroism. Randall Patrick Mc Murphy was not a person of admirable morality. He was no cavalier- his armor rusted and tarnished, his shield dented, his demeanor dirty and belligerent. However, he was a leader.

He gave a collection of half-man dignity and pride, inspiring them in whatever way to carry on his fight. Although personally I am not much a reader, I found this book very easy reading. It seemed to be able to keep my attention and was always wondering what Mc Murphy was going to do next. I think that I would definitely be interested in reading more of Key s work.
