In the novella The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde the author Robert Louis Stevenson is attempting to say that at the time most noblemen seemed to be fine and upstanding citizens, but inside they hid dark secrets. If one would let this evil side act it would eventually dominate. Stevenson creates this image by means of two main characters, Dr. Jekyll and Mr.

Hyde who are both by appearance and personality different. Mr Hyde and Dr. Jekyll are a contradiction between good and evil. Mr. Hyde is a small man who commits brutal acts all throughout the short story.

His heinous acts include, a trampling of the little girl on the street corner and a brutal slaying of Mr. Carew, a well known man. Hyde also shows that he is evil when he indirectly kills Dr Jekyll, because he did not follow the intention of the experiment, which makes Jekyll drink a special chemical solution to transform into Hyde, and vice versa. Mr. Hyde is hated by everyone he meets. Although they do not know how to name this, they recall sensing him as something deeply evil about his demeanour.

This is the total opposite of Dr. Jekyll who is know to be a well respected man who is kind and friendly to his associates. Dr. Jekyll often arranges dinner parties where he is a very talkative man and extremely hospitable. He on the other hand is seen often throughout the story, and has a normal or a slightly good impression as he is met by his chaps, or even by a stranger. Jekyll is also able to admit that after a few months of experimenting with Hyde, eventually the little man s demands became increasingly extreme, seeking more and more power.

He admits, I was slowly losing hold of my original and better self, and becoming slowly incorporated with my second and worse. This shows that he is understanding what is happening, and that he is friendly, and wants to stay friendly but the urge of Mr. Hyde is too large. Mr. Hyde s appearance is very symbolic to his evil side. His ancestors are unknown, and he has not been seen frequently by anyone, even his maid had only seen him twice.

Once seen by Mr. Enfield, a man that often takes Sunday walks through town with his friend Mr Utters on, who is the lawyer of Dr. Jekyll, states what his impression was of Mr. Hyde as he saw him for the first time There is something wrong with his appearance; something displeasing, something downright detestable. P. 15.

This shows an opinion which is shared throughout the book by all characters who believe there is something awkward about his appearance even at first glance, they find him looking evil, small and sometimes even deformed in some sort of way. Even the maid says he is wicked-looking P. 31. Hyde was also said to be wearing nice clothes but unfortunately too large for him. On the other hand Dr.

Jekyll s appearance is large, well-made, man at around fifty years of age This is a nineteenth century role model structure, which creates a sort of respect as he is encountered. He has a stylish cast as well. This makes him look very smart and therefore known as good, not evil. This was often the case in older times where men with knowledge were one of the most respected in society.

His clothes also fit him very well, and are very elegant clothes, which are somewhat equal in quality to Mr. Hyde s clothes. He on the contrary to Mr. Hyde is seen much more throughout the book. He is a man which everyone knows. This generates a feel opposite to that of the mysterious feel of Mr.

Hyde s unknown figure. Between good and evil there is a large difference, the identical can be stated between the knowledge of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. It is clearly evident that Dr Jekyll is producing highly scientifically substances throughout the story. He generally shows the reader more physiological thinking than Hyde. He time after time shows an effort to dig deeper into the subject at steak. This is the total opposite of Mr.

Hyde who basically only speaks, once spoken to. Mr. Hyde is not as smart and intelligent as Dr. Jekyll to any extent. This is shown multiple times throughout the short mysterious novel. One good example is when Mr.

Hyde after brutally murdering Mr. Carew burns several papers in his house, causing suspect to rise in the case. Also the investigators find the missing half of the walking cane which was donated to Dr. Jekyll, and stolen by Hyde.

This once again illustrates how thoughtful and how much less intelligent Mr. Hyde is compared to Dr. Jekyll. Stevenson, using the dialogue of Jekyll, goes on to say that all people are a composite of both good and evil. He asserts, all human beings are commingled out of good and evil. Here, Stevenson is leaving the reader a large chance to see intelligent Jekyll is by actually also demonstrating the theme of the story in the same sentence.

All in all Stevenson takes great pains to show that the evil Mr. Hyde is very deadly. Stevenson states this through Hyde s awkward appearance, his level of intelligence, and his personality. Yet Stevenson s story doesn t have a happy ending. Indeed Satan s dominance over the body of Dr. Jekyll eventually pays its price.

Soon Jekyll has no control over Hyde, who appears by himself whenever Jekyll dozes off to sleep. Finally Hyde causes Jekyll to commit suicide. In short, Stevenson is trying to say that if one gives evil an inch, it will take a mile. 949 WORDS
