Innate Weaknesses Human nature is a topic often examined and is discussed in Shakespeare's Othello. Specific human traits that are negative are present in all humans, yet some control them better than others. These negative traits are considered innate weaknesses in human composition. Weaknesses in human nature, such as self-interest, jealousy, and lust, are all demonstrated in Othello.

Iago is considered the main villain of the play, and in knowing of these certain human weaknesses, he uses them to his own advantage. At the same time, Iago proves to be an embodiment of these weaknesses. These certain characteristics are dominate over characters personalities and result in harmful consequences. By having Iago use to his advantage certain human vices and weaknesses, Shakespeare is presenting the unavoidable weaknesses in human nature and their consequences. Iago performs his evil doings for self-interest and brings this innate desire of bettering oneself out in Othello as part of his plan. Iago claims to hate the Moor (I.

III. 380), yet, for the necessity of present life [he] must show out a flag and sign of love (I. I. 156, 157). In order for him to use Othello, though, Iago must first raise in Othello a desire for bettering himself. Iago states that he will try and make Othello's jealousy so strong that judgment cannot cure (ll. l. 293 - 294). This jealousy will lead Othello to become irrational and desperate to be back in peace and in control of his relationship.

As well, Othello will want to get out of the shameful position of being labeled a cuckold. By killing Desdemona in an irrational act where no factual evidence ever existed, Othello lets himself be controlled by jealousy and by Iago. This tragic murder represents the degree of possible results from tempting the universal, deep-seated desire for power and bettering of oneself. Jealousy, one of the most common human emotions, is not only presented as one the tools used by Iago, but, as well, Iago proves a victim to it. Iago knows that if he can convince Othello that an affair between Cassio and Desdemona exists, then Othello will be so consumed in jealousy that he will become Iago's to control. In Act III, Iago begins to drop the first big hints to Othello of unfaithfulness.

Othello replies that he will not be controlled by jealousy, but Iago calmly tells him to look to your wife; observe her well with Cassio. Wear your eye thus: not jealous, nor secure (III. III. 195, 196). Iago is using almost a reverse psychology, as he knows that his statement will make Othello both suspicious and distrusting of Desdemona. Desdemona once replies to Emilias mention of jealousy and begs, Heaven keep that monster form Othello's mind (III. IV. 158).

Interestingly, she seems to be acknowledging the dangers of distrust before they have even been carried out. Still, Iago's maliciousness and pure self- interest continues with his planting of Desdemona's handkerchief in Cassio's room and so on. Ironically, Iago seems to have been driven to his plan of destroying Othello, out of jealousy as well. He claims that Othello has committed an infidelity with his wife, Emilia and done his office (I.

III. 382). Since the main conflict arisen in this play is affairs, the human vice of lists presented. In Act IIII, scene I, Iago is convincing Othello of the affair by speaking with Cassio about Bianca, while Othello eavesdrops and thinks the conversation is about Desdemona. When Cassio exists, Iago approaches Othello and begins, Did you perceive how he laughed at his vice? (170) This demonstrates Iago conscientiously using the vice of lust to his advantage. Again, in Act II, Iago is conscientiously using the vice lust in a conversation with Rodrigo. He pushes that Desdemona herself is falling to lust and foul thoughts (II.

I. 249, 250). Iago, therefore, uses the vice lust in an effort to cause suspicions and problems that will help him personally in the end. Iago seems to view the characters in Othello as obstacles in his way of getting money and power. He uses what he knows of the innate human characteristics and threatening vices to knock everyone out of his way. Yet even Iago, who uses these weaknesses to his advantage, falls to them as well.

Shakespeare therefore shows that even the malicious planner who has skillfully tried to only excite self-interest, jealousy, and lust in other characters, cannot help but bring them up in himself as well; this proves that certain characteristics exist in everyone. 333
