Should Americans Celebrate Columbus Day? On October 12, 1492, Christopher Columbus, a Portuguese explorer, landed on an island near Cuba, which he named San Salvador. It was the first time that Europeans reached America, marking the beginning of contact between Europe and the American continent. Before Columbus, Europeans had not known that American continent. After Columbus discovery, Europeans started to settle in America. Some Americans think that Columbus Day should not be a national holiday.
However, Columbus day should be celebrated because Columbus is the first European who initiated contact with America, who started to colonize. The continent later leading to European migration and to the modernization of America. Columbus is important in American history because he started to colonize the Indian people. Although he failed to establish a stable colony, his actions affected the other Europeans who later established colonies in America.
The English and French colonized North America; the Spaniards and the Portuguese colonized mostly Central and South America. The most important reason for colonization was to spread the Christian religion to the world, however, in order to colonize, the Europeans had to use their language to explain what Christian is about. Thus, they taught the European languages to the natives, such as English and French in North America, Spanish and Portuguese in South America these languages helped to unify the people. Now the Americans can communicate with each other with their language. Because Columbus started the process of communication, Americans should honor him. After Columbus landing on South America, Europeans started to migrate to America.
They brought horses, too, which increase the speed of traveling. Food in Europe and America traveled across the sea; Indians exchanged gold for food, and this the became known as the Columbia Exchange. Commerce in America grew fast because Columbus was the one who brought the trade that helped American economy, he should be honored in the celebration of Columbus Day. Because of the Europeans the America has became more modernized. When Columbus came, Europe already had a vigorous printing industry, books helped more people to realize there was a New World at the other side of the ocean. The Spaniards found tobacco was a very good product to sell; people liked it a lot.
Therefore, they built tobacco factories to process the tobacco. This was a turning point of the American industrialization, American were able to built factory that time. They brought new technology and enhanced architectures in America. Therefore, Americans hold celebrate Columbus Day because Columbus began the migration, which led to the European industrialization of America. Should Americans celebrate Columbus Day? The answer is yes.
