Which format did you find most meaningful, the book, or the movie? I feel that the movie did a good job of dramatizing some of the encounters and feelings that the Jews in concentration camps had experienced. Although the film was good, and placed a decent portrayal of the book into my mind, I still feel the book was better.
Prior to reading the book, I had seen the movie Schindler s List. So when I read, the descriptive language in the book, it was translated into my mind as some of the vivid scenes I saw in the movie by Steven Spielberg. On that note, I can say that the book was more meaningful. When Hannah first left the family gathering, and woke up in the dream was one of the biggest differences to me. In the book, the way I saw Hannah, was calm, but really confused. In the movie, Hannah (Kristen Dunst) seemed worried, and too nervous, eager to prove that she is from New Rochelle.
The next big difference that I saw was when the wedding guests were arguing over weather they were going to stay where they were, or go with the Nazis. There was another non-book related part in the movie when this scene took place; the wedding had already been carried out. The book made it seem like Hannah only spoke to a few people about what was going to happen, while the rabbi explained everything, and only yelled at everyone when she said, were all going to die if we go. In the movie Hannah was screaming the whole time (in this particular scene), and was fighting harder to make everyone to stay than in the book. This was probably more like what would have happened, if someone actually knew what was going to take place, but if you think about it, that would seem sort of obnoxious. The third scene that I thought had the biggest difference was the way I pictured the actual Jews while they worked, and while they were stripped or nude.
I pictured bodies of skin and bone, deteriorating from starvation, and sleep deprivation. The bodies in the film, were better fed, and rested for sure, (you could get the point) of course it s going to be hard to get people to starve themselves for a role in a not-so-box-office must see movie, but regardless, they still weren t as good as the figments of my imagination. Essay 2 answers, or explains: Compare the Aunt Eva you meet at the beginning of the story to the aunt Eva you know at the end. Why do you think these changes take place (especially from Hannah s perspective)? 2. Aunt Eva was a special character, and necessary to the success of the book. At the beginning, she was sort of just a plain character that you could find in any book (a favorite aunt big whoop).
Her personality, description, and importance to Hannah made her out to be a quiet character in the beginning. I think the writer was trying to focus more on Hannah at that point in the book. But when the dream started, that s when the aunt Eva s, who we didn t quite know was her yet, her role importance, and meaning starts rising. Hannah even gives up her life to save her aunt Eva s. If Hannah had not done this, what would have the story been like when she woke up? When Hannah finds out that aunt Eva is the girl with her in the dream, all of the stories that aunt Eva had told her were more important, and more respect for aunt Eva is gained.
At the end of the book, Aunt Eva opens up to Hannah, and is clueless about how Hannah knew about her past. This is when Aunt Eva became an important, and more lifelike character in the book. It gave me all new feelings, about Aunt Eva, and made me want to go back, and catch every detail about her. By this happening, it also made me realize what she went through must have been the most emotional time in her life, to have a friend save your life by giving theirs.
After reading this book, I felt more sorrow for all of those people, and it helped me understand what they really experienced. Essay 3 answers, or explains: What did you think the author, Jane Yolen was trying to teach the reader when she chose the metaphor, Devil s Arithmetic as the title for her book? 3. Devil s Arithmetic, lets break it down: Devil (s) belonging to -demon, Lucifer, the dark angel. Arithmetic-mathematics-multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction. What I get out of it is the Devil s multiplication of dead Jews, the division of the Jewish population, addition of Jews into afterlife, and the subtraction of Jewish people in Germany, and other European countries. I think Jane Yolen chose a beautiful metaphor for an ugly subject.
The two-word title sends a striking, emotion filled chill through your body, when you really think about what it means. I could say that Devil s Arithmetic applies to the time in general, WWII, because it could be the multiplication of dead, division of population, addition of into afterlife, and subtraction of people in Germany, and other European countries. But the book was about Jewish people, and the Holocaust. Therefore in addition to all of what it could mean, I feel the term was meant to teach the special importance of what it means to Jewish people all around the world, and people who care about what happened to them during the Holocaust.
