How To Delight Yourself In The Lord Psalm 37: 4 says Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart, what does this verse mean? Does it mean that if we have fun and are christians God will give us everything we want? If we do not sin against God he will give us the desires of our heart? To what extent does the desires of our heart reach?
If I delight myself in the Lord does it mean that he will give me the mansion with 10 garages that I have always dreamed about since I was a little girl? If the Lord was to give me the desires of my heart, how long would I have to wait upon the Lord for them? There are four main principles in delighting yourself in the Lord: 1. Delight In His Ways (Proverbs 16: 7) This means that we are to follow Gods ways (commandments), but not just to follow them and obey them, but to do it with a willing heart. We are to delight in his ways, in the dictionary delight is defined as please greatly, take pleasure. It means nothing to God if you follow and obey his ways yet do it greenly and with a hardened heart.
For example, we are to love our enemies, love should not have conditions, therefore if you can not truly say that you love all your enemies you are not delighting fully in the Lords ways. Jesus tells us to look each other in the eyes and say I love you and mean it! I know that you guys that are reading this are thinking what? ... If I went up to another guy and said that he would beat me up. Most girls dont have major problems in this area, but most guys do. Guys need to stop thinking about what others around them will say, we need to stop thinking about our image and show Jesus love, because thats the way God has commanded us to live. 2.
Delight In His Works (Titus 1: 16) This doesnt mean that we are to walk around care free (like the hippies in the 70 s) admiring Gods creations (though we are to thank him for things like that daily). It means that we are to have fun with what he has given us, not to go out partying every night and coming home drunk, but to rejoice with him in everything he does in our lifes and be thankful that he is continually working amongst and within us. As it is said in Phillipians 2: 13 God is working in you to help you want to do and be able to do what pleases him. Dont do so called Christian things for yourself... let God take you through it for his reasons. 3. Delight In His Word (Psalm 119: 9 - 16) We are a group of people (Christians) who get to spend eternity with God, the God who is big enough to make a universe trillions of trillions of trillions of kilometres wide, isnt that in itself mind blowing?
We learn all of Gods promises by reading the word (the bible) and his instructions for us to follow. Jesus is the Word-come-to-life. We should start thinking about whats written about and promised in the Bible. King David wrote in Psalm 8: 3, Who am I that you think of me? Lets no forget that we are so lucky to have a father in heaven who is taking care of us and wants the best for us, but in order to take advantage of what God has promised us we need to know what he has promised us, all of this is found in the Bible.
Be wrapped in Jesus, not embarrassed by his name! Think about what he went through for us just so that we could have eternal life: having his beard ripped out, the whipping with a whip made of pig knuckles and bits of broken pottery, being spat at, punched in the face and finally crucified. To love Jesus is to appreciate what he did and respond to it by dedication your life to him and living by the Word of God in the Bible. 4. Delight In His Will (Romans 12: 2) If you apply yourself to all three guidelines above your desires will be the same as his desires for you.
When you live your life this way and begin to grow and learn more with the Lord you will realise that God only wants the best for his children (thats you and I). When your heart confirms that this is what God wants for me, youll know youre going to get it...
