I found the play Death of a Salesman to be quite interesting. Each character had their own unique personality. Ms. Loman played the perfect wife. Obedient to her husband and at the same time concerned about his mental health. She was almost the perfect mother as well.
She loved her two sons, Biff and Happy, but disliked the way that they disregarded him as being less than a man. Willy Loman, her husband, happened to be a hard working salesman losing his mind and just lost his job. He is going crazy because he blames himself for his oldest son, Biff s failure. Every time Biff comes back home to visit, Willy s mental state of being seems to worsen. Biff fear becoming like his father.
He rather plays than work and can never seem to keep a job. He hates the normal hassles of everyday city life. Early on in his life, Biff seems to have it all. He was an outstanding high school football player with a bright future. Several colleges and universities were look at him and considering him as a possible contributor to their programs. However, he suddenly decides to throw it all away and give up on life when he finds out that his father was cheating on his mother.
Happy goes through life not worrying about anyone bit himself. As long as he has his women friends Happy is happy. As a boy, Happy craved attention from his father but he always paid more attention to Biff and ignored Happy most of the time. This play was a bit difficult to follow.
The constant flash backs and lapses of time were confusing. Nevertheless, I did understand why it was done that way. It puts you in the mind of Willy Loman. Everything is confusing and it is difficult to distinguish reality from fantasy and past from present. My only objection to the production of the play is that it should had been done realistic instead of anti-realistic. I feel this way because the characters seem to live as a perfect family until Biff found out that his father was cheating on his mother.
However, I do understand why the play was done anti-realistic, with all the back flashes and hallucinations, and all. In addition, the family was poor and living in the city making it difficult to produce the play realistic. The performances of the actors were convincing and the play was overall entertaining. The play did what it was supposed to do which is to entertain and I personally enjoyed it.
