I received my results from my exams, as expected I flunked math. Three marks was the difference between failure and a pass. I needed that pass to play football. I went to Boston to see if Pop could talk to my teacher and obtain a pass for me. Pop worked hard for Hap and I. He tried to involve us in his life and to be a committed father.

That is never easy when you have never had a role model yourself. I never wanted to be a salesman, Pop always wanted me to follow in his footsteps. I attempted to be a salesman to keep him happy. I never really got into it. I was fired from every job I had. My one dream was to be outdoors with my shirt off and even own my own ranch.

To this day I think there s nothing more inspiring than the sight of a mare and a new colt. When Pop died I felt that he had all of the wrong dreams. Pop had more success in his building around the house. There was more of him in the front stoop than in every sale he ever made. He never knew who he was because he was always living up to his false expectations. Someone should have told him how good he was with his hands.

But we never told the truth to each other. Going to Boston changed my life forever. Finding Pop with another woman, made me realise our whole life was built up on Pop s false dreams. His dream was to be the best salesman in New England. He thought success meant being number one and the amount of money you earned. He never accomplished his dream.

I realised what a liar Pop had become. He lied about his popularity, his sales figures and was not open to Mom about what happened in Boston. Seeing Pop in his room with another woman angered me. My relationship with him was built on false dreams and mistrusts, I never really knew him. I lost all sense of direction, I didn t know where life was heading. I didn t want to do anything.

I lost all dreams of playing football for Virginia State I was angry, I should have gone to summer school. I got so mad, took it out on my sneakers. Couldn t tell Bernard, couldn t talk to Pop and defiantly couldn t tell Mom. So what did I do? Spend fifteen years wasting my life. I was going to make a future for myself.

Pop s death made me stop thinking about Boston and to get on with my life. I had to stop lying. I d become just like Pop. Knowing he d been lying for all of those years made me think that he must have been lying about my football skills. I still wonder if I could have made it.

I never stuck at anything back then, in fifteen years I went through about thirty jobs. At least Pop had the same job for all those years. I never appreciated this fact until I stayed in the same job for a long period of time. Pop always wanted the best for us.

I think this is why he always measured his success in monetary values so he could give us anything we wanted. I remember him saying in Boston that he was lonely. We both were lonelier after the Boston incident. I can t blame Pop for me going to gaol and we never spent a lot of time together after I left. Our relationship was built up on me playing football. When I didn t play football our relationship fell apart.

He was right you know, I did cut down my life for spite and stoped bringing home prizes. I m not a sales man I don t lie to myself anymore, I m not alone but I have stuck at a job. I have a ranch, not a big one, but it s a future. I m a father now, happened late in life.

I want my kids to know what it was like for me growing up in Brooklyn. I never really knew Pop or understood him I don t want that for my kids. Who knows, my boy might just play for The University of Dakota.
