The Chocolate War Robert Cormier New York: Dell Publishing, September 1986. 1 st Edition. pp. 191. Park. The Chocolate Wars Plot is centered around a boy named Jerry Renault, who is a freshman that attends Trinity Highschool.

At Trinity High the young men are asked to sell boxes of chocolate as an annual fund raiser. No body has ever refused to sell the candy bars until Jerry Renault appeared. Throughout the years at Trinity, the students were asked to sell twenty-five boxes of chocolate at the price of one dollar a box. This year was different because the headmaster Brother Jacques was sick in the hospital and Brother Leon had to take his place.

Brother Leon asked the students to sell fifty boxes instead of twenty-five boxes because he had ordered 20, 000 boxes of chocolate instead of 10, 000 and the students must sell each box for two dollars and not one dollar. Brother Leon needed extra help selling the chocolates, so he asks Archie Costello, the leader of the Vigils, and the Vigils themselves to help motivate the kids to sell twice as many chocolates as they did last year. During the story all the kids are asked if they would sell chocolates. All the kids respond yes but Jerry. This is because Jerry has been assigned, by Archie and the Vigils, not to sell chocolates for a week. The Vigils are a group of boys that we would consider a gang but they do not believe in violence.

Archie is head of the Vigils and he is in charge of assigning teenagers their assignments. When Jerry is assigned his job, he follows his orders and completes the assignment of not selling chocolates for one week. After a week of not selling any chocolates, Jerry decides he still does not want to sell the chocolates, although he was not under the rule of The Vigils. Even though the students agreed to sell chocolates the sales were going awfully slow, and there was no way the students would meet their quota of fifty boxes of chocolates at the pace they were going. After realizing that the sales were moving at a slow pace, Brother Leon then asked Archie and the Vigils, when they would help him. After Brother Leon's confrontation with Archie, the chocolate sales pace began to pick up.

Archie had told the vigils to sell over their quota of fifty boxes of chocolate, and to sell as many as possible. Archie and the Vigils got the job done and distributed out the boxes of chocolate evenly to everyone but Jerry. For example if someone only sold twenty-seven boxes of chocolate, The Vigils would take an extra twenty-two boxes they sold, and add it to their sales. The Vigils almost sold 19, 950 boxes of chocolate with a little help from Trinity Highschool students. This left Jerry's fifty boxes of chocolates the only boxes not sold. This book has significance to me because the main character, Jerry, is a freshman in highschool, who is worried about making the football team, which falls into my category also.

The book is also significant to me because it teaches me that you should always be responsible or there will be consequences that lie ahead and if something is asked of you that youre not particularly crazy about, but is not a really difficult task, just do it and get it over with. If you get through with it, more than likely there will be a reward waiting for you in the future. The way the students are characterized is magnificent. He really did an excellent job keeping the boys personality very realistic, which contributed to the book a lot. The writing was also very impressive.

It was easy to read and understand, but still did not seem like a childrens book. It seem to be written perfectly for young adults to read. The Chocolate War is appropriate for highschool students because the book is about highschool, the way young adults that attend highschool behave, and it gives students a feel of what highschool is like.
