Shakespeare's Sonnet Makes Beauty Explicit&# 038; Q Essay, ResearchShakespeares Sonnet Makes Beauty Explicit&# 038; Q My mistress eyes are nothing like the sun; Coral is far more red than her lips red; If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun; If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head. I have seen roses demand red and white, But no such roses see I in her cheeks, And in some perfumes there is more delight Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks. 8 I love to hear her speak, yet well I know That music hath a far more pleasing sound. I grant I never saw a goddess go; My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground: 12 And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare As any she belied with false compare... William Shakespeare in My Mistress Eyes Are Nothing Like The Sun, creates a persona who speaks to an audience about realistic human beauty.

In the sonnet the poet recognizes that society puts pressure on women to live up to certain standards of beauty. The poet works to enlighten the audience about the issue through a dramatic monologue by evaluating the beauty of his mistress. The poet disagrees that the woman is like any of the objects most people associate with beauty. He argues that this type of comparison is unfair. The poet enlightens the reader that images of beauty are falsely used to judge women.

Objects cannot be used in comparison to an individual, because every person is different and rare in their own way. A goddess does not exist, but a uniqueness in everything. In the beginning of the sonnet it might seem that the poet is describing this woman as unappealing, but in the last four lines, he goes on to explain the reasons behind his logic. Until line 10, the poet describes the woman as not having any qualities in common with the objects generally considered as beautiful. On the first approach this description causes the reader to visualize the woman as ugly.

We might see her as a woman with dull skin, ratty hair, stinky breath, and a whiny voice. We may not overcome this interpretation if we do not understand what the poet concludes in the last four lines of the sonnet. The last four lines explain that this woman, my love, is as unique and beautiful as all of those objects, and to compare her to them is an insult to her rare qualities. The first six lines compare the woman with a variety of items. The poets mistress eyes are nothing like the sun, her lips are not near as red as coral, if snow is white her skin is gray, her hair is like wire, and her face not nearly the blush color of roses. The title of the sonnet and first comparison we come to is that of the womans eyes to the sun.

The poet simply states My mistress eyes are nothing like the sun. Which of course, as he is pointing out, is true. Eyes cannot be anything like the sun. Only one sun exists, and his mistress only possesses one set of eyes. Eyes are eyes and the sun is the sun. They are two completely different objects and logically compared we could not determine that they have any similarities.

The second line tells the reader that the womans lips are not near as red as coral. Coral bares a shade of red that human beings lips cannot obtain. He describes her skin as far from the color of white. Even the palest people do not have skin that can be considered white. Cheeks do not normally bare a shade of pink, at least not without makeup, as roses bear.

A womans breathe could not possibly smell like perfume. The poet states, I love to hear her speak, but admits music sounds much better than her voice. All these things would be considered insults if the poet did not explain his reasoning. His love, and all people, possess qualities that are unique only to them. No object can possess human qualities, therefore, we cannot compare people to these objects. All women, including the poets love, receive compliments in comparison to objects they are nothing like.

For example, your voice is music to my ears, and your eyes sparkle like the stars, depict women with unrealistic qualities. The poet concludes that these comparisons do not do justice to the beauty found in a persons voice or their eyes, or any part of them. His love is beautiful in a way that the poet recognizes as unique and precious to him. He explains, I never saw a goddess go, by so, implying that if there was a goddess to compare women with the comparisons might be justified, but an image of beauty that does not exist is an unfair standard. Beauty is conceptual and universal standards do not exist. The poet has compassion for his mistress who has belied this unfair comparison throughout her lifetime and must continue to bear this treatment from society.

The poet condemns comparisons and standards of beauty. The fact that Shakespeare recognized these comparisons were / are unfair is a concept way ahead of his time. 361
