Color Blindness Color blindness (Daltonism; color vision deficiency) is a condition in which certain colors cannot be distinguished, and is most commonly due to an inherited condition. Although defective color vision may be acquired as a result of another eye disorder, the vast majority of color blind cases are hereditary present at birth. A form of color blindness is present to some degree in about 12 per cent of males, and about 0. 5 per cent of females may be affected. Problems in distinguishing reds and greens are the most common.

Blue deficiencies are very rare. Total color blindness is very rare. One in every twelve men and one in every 165 women have a color vision disability. It is a problem that most likely affects someone you know. Red-green color blindness is an example of a sex-linked inherited characteristic. It can be carried and passed on by females, but is only manifested in males.

If a womans father or her son is color blind, she has the gene on her X-chromosome. If her brother, or her sisters son, is color blind, there is a 50 % chance she carries the gene. If she has the gene then any son she has will have a 50 % chance of being color blind and any daughter will have a 50 % chance of being a carrier. Color blindness is a malfunction of the retina, which converts light energy into electrical energy that is then transmitted to the brain. This conversion is accomplished by two types of photoreceptor cells in the retina: rods and cones. Cones (color sensitive receptors) contaistructures or visual pigments sensitive to one of three wavelengths of light: red, green, and blue.

Normal persons are able to match all colors of the spectrum by mixtures of only three fundamental color sensitivities. Hence, the huge variety of colors we perceive stems from the cone cells response to different compositions of wavelengths of light. Defects in color vision occur when one of the three cone cell color coding structures fails to function properly. One of the visual pigments may be present and functioning abnormally, or it may be absent altogether. Color blindness is normally diagnosed through clinical testing. There is no treatment for color blindness, nor is it usually the cause of any significant disability.

As color blindness is a genetic disorder, there may, long term, be the prospect of gene therapy. Early experiments with this (for other genetic disorders) have not so far proved successful, but it seems likely that a way will be found eventually. Color blindness will presumably be well down the list of priorities, but it is an intriguing possibility. For practical purposes, all color-deficient individuals have varieties of red or green deficiency.

Color deficient patients are not completely red or green blind. Compared to persons with normal color vision, they have some trouble differentiating between certain colors, but the severity of the color deficiency is variable. Most color deficient persons compensate well for their defect and may even discover instances in which they can discern details and images that would escape normal-sighted persons.
