Child abuse and neglect reports have more than doubled in the past two decades. Children are abused many different ways every day and many abuse and neglect cases go unreported every year. Some of the many ways children are the most commonly heard of ones: kicking, punching, and hitting. Some children also have to drink cleaning supplies, sleep in cold, dark basements, and go weeks without any food at all.

However, all of the above may happen, and outsiders still would not report a suspicion of child abuse or neglect to anyone at all. The government comments, The current rates of unsound reports go beyond anything that is reasonably needed. Worse, they endanger children who are really abused. Abuse cases that go unnoticed and unreported the child who is being abused then most likely dies due to maltreatment. The kinds of abuse endured by many children seem to vary according to statistics, the age and gender of the child, and the way the parents raise and treat their children.

Physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse and baby abuse are the main kinds of abuse. Physical abuse, intentionally harming a person s body, is the most heard of kind of abuse but is not most common. Physical abuse can range anywhere from a black eye to broken bones or from burns and scalding to stabbing and cuts. In 1962, Dr. C. Henry Kenpe, named the Battered Child Syndrome after many children went to the emergency room for very preventable injuries resulting from accidents involving the parents.

Now, any kind of abuse is a crime and a felony in most states including Florida. The amount of child abuse and neglect in the United States today is a national emergency, Dr. Kenpe commented. Abuse of any kind can occur in any type of environment and any type of family, no matter where they live, race, financial stability, or their culture. One in every three people questioned, say they are or where somehow affected by child abuse and or neglect. Emotional abuse, is not as common, but is the most damaging type of abuse.

The repetition of the insults, criticisms, taunts, and humiliation, ruin a child s inner strength, and undermine a child s self-confidence and emotional state of mind and well being. In addition, not showing any gratitude, offering encouragement, or praise can also emotionally abuse a child if it goes to an extreme. Most people who emotionally abuse children, are nice one minute, rude, and nasty the next minute. Emotional abuse is not as publicized because not many people know that you can really abuse a child by what you say or do not say. Sexual abuse, the most common and most heard of form of child abuse, is the taking advantage of a child s body sexually. Most cases of sexual abuse involve someone other than a stranger.

Incest, the worst form of sexual abuse, is when someone who is related by blood or marriage abuses a child, is undetected, and are ignored because of the fact most people think incest along with other types of abuse only occur in poor families. In the past 5 years, reports have shown up to 90 % or more sexual abuse cases involve family members and known family friends. One in every three girls and one in every eight boys under the age of eighteen, will be sexually abused and molested this year, not including those who will be kidnapped, or kicked out. Most victims, both boys and girls, who are or have been sexually abused do not get help and suffer from emotional problems.

Victims also blame what happened to them on them, convincing themselves that it is their fault, or it is not that bad, which then leads them into depression, and denial. Ten to Twenty percent of grown men and twenty-five to thirty-five percent of women are victims of sexual abuse. One in every six Americans has been sexually abused as a child. Baby abuse, is any kind of abuse done to a child under age of five. However, the average age of all abused children is seven years of age.

It can be something as small as a baby crying because of a dirty diaper, or because they are hungry, to a screaming baby because they are hurt or scared, that could be enough to set off a drugged or drunk parent and they would snap, and the baby would be dead in a few minutes, says family therapist Dr. Barbara Montague. Alcohol and drugs are the two leading reasons parents abuse and neglect their children. When a child is raised with abusive parents, the child in turn becomes abusive towards others, such as friends, other family members. A child who has abusive parents then also becomes an abusive parent. Fifty (50), percent of abused children become abusive parents.

Parents who abuse their children often use an excuse such as poverty, financial problems, stress, poor living conditions, or even something as small as a bad day. Neglect and abusive parents often become preoccupied with negative feelings towards each other, their job, social life, and themselves, which then leaves the child with feelings of abandonment, unloved, and un-wanted ness. The effects of abuse are horrible especially for young children, after being abused for a period of time, a child of any age, will become, confused, violent, and doubted. They will lose any self-esteem, self-value, self-worth, and self-confidence they still had left.

Adolescents, especially teens, will try to harm and / or kill themselves if someone wont reach out to them and try to help or show them some love. Eighty, (80), percent of abuse and neglect cases are a result of drinking. Most cases of child abuse and neglect, never make it into the news broadcasts, and never make newspaper or magazine article headlines There are many ways to help aid and prevent child abuse and neglect from ever happening or happening again. There are four main and effective strategies to the most effective prevention and intervention.

The first strategy is, they must be comprehensive and integrating the contributions of social service, legal, law enforcement, health, mental health, and education professionals. The second strategy is that prevention and intervention must also be neighborhood based, which will strengthen the neighborhood and community by encouraging and supporting local improvement efforts, including self-help programs, that make the environment more supportive of families and children. Then, the third strategy is called child-centered, which protects the safety and personal integrity of children and giving primary attention to their best interests. Finally, the fourth strategy to the most effective prevention and intervention in child maltreatment and neglect is called family-focused, which will strength the families, supporting and enhancing their functioning, providing intensive services, when needed, and removing children from the home, or any of the parents, when it is only necessary and appropriate.

Other ways of helping in prevention and intervention are Health Care Initiative, Community-Based Initiatives, Parent Education Programs, Workplace Initiatives, and Family-centered Welfare to Work Programs, Social Services, and Prevention in Schools. The government, and the Catholic Church, both want to help the child be safe, however, their views and how the go about helping victims who have been abused and those who abused them, are very different. First off, the government would most likely assign a social worker to investigate the reports of abuse and talk to the child, then if necessary, they would have the child removed from the home and the parent or parents arrested. Whereas, with the church involved, they would help the family over come the obstacles and help them realize what is happening maybe by going to catholic family therapists, talking with priests and deacons, helping in anyway possible, but keeping the family together and the child or children in the home with the biological parents. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, we as Catholics believe, These human rights depend neither on single individuals nor on parents; nor do they represent a concession made by society and the state; they belong to human nature and are inherent in the person by virtue of the creative act from which the person took his origin. Among such fundamental rights should one mention in this regard every human being s right to life and physical integrity from the moment of conception. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, p. 607) However, when the victims has been sexually abused, or is a victim of incest, the church, does remove the child from the parents or guardians likewise so does the government.

St. Paul stigmatizes the fact over and over the incest is a very big and morally wrong offense which corrupts family relationships and marks retaliation towards other family members and causes a virtual war within that family. However, the victim is usually scarred for life, by the moral offense which is compounded by the scandalous harm done physically, mentally, and morally to their inner self, their integrity, and self-respect. Both the church and the government believe if someone sees or suspects any kind of abuse but especially child abuse, they are as guilty as the abuser if they do not try to help at all and if they do not try to get the abused any help. I feel as if child abuse and neglect in America today is a very big problem. With over three million children dying each year from abuse, neglect, and maltreatment, we can t afford to over look this problem.

Children are the future, and if they grow up abuse, or neglected, what will those children be like as parents? They will be abusers as well. Today, we have parents burying their children in their own backyard, and going on with their life as if nothing had happened. This needs to stop, children need to be showed that they are loved and no one can take their self-confidence, and self-respect away from them.

We need to be more open to the fact that one in three people are somehow affected by abuse and they will not let you know they need help or are in trouble until, you ask them. In addition, even then, you may not succeed. However, just keep in mind that a child s life may be in your hands and you may be the only one that could help that child survive. The kinds of abuse, endured by many children seem to vary according to statistics, the age and gender of the child, and the way the parents raise and treat their children.
